I was ay the game on Monday, and two things stood out to me: (1) as everyone is saying, he wasn't full speed all the time, which made him more effective; (2) he wanted the puck. The kid was really hungry to get the puck on his stick -- he felt like he could really do something in that game, and really was the only Ranger who looked to be dangerous throughout the game.

It is WAY too early for me to gloat about Kreider, when so many of you wanted to up and toss him aside at an extreme discount.

No, I'll wait till the results are more pronounced before reminding all of you who gave me a hard time that he who laughs last, laughs best.

CK would have been here earlier but for
(Torts/bone chips last year/need to get enough adjustment to pro game).
Playing him w/Pyatt in training camp did not help.

I remind everyone, (cue up the music...)
the best is yet to come....

When CK is eventually, finally put on a line w/Miller at C and Fast or Cally at RW, then things will up a coupla notches. Speed across the board really kills.

I still feel Torts was the absolute worst kind of coach for a player like kreider. I think the lockout also was a setback. Both Richards and kreider said that he was uptight and nervous of making a mistake. even last year he showed good flashes but the second he made teh smallest mistake Torts stapled him to the bench and sent him to Hartford. Now he has been able to take a deep breathe have fun and just let the game come to him. Kreider isnt going to be dominant every game which is fine because John tavares was pretty quiet alst night and he is elite as they come. i dont think he will regress because he now knows what it takes

That's one of the differences I see with AV and Tortorella. The latter will bench you for mistakes. AV will keep running you out there. That's good for young players.

In this case I am referring more to size.

He looked lanky from what I saw last season. Needs to bulk up more.

Kreider was a man when he was drafted. His skills weren't raw though, as opposed to McIlrath.

Gotcha. Fair enough - although I did see progress in that area, I would agree that he has more meat to add to his bones. (No bad joke between you and Inferno intended.)

What kind of "mistakes" are you even talking about? I keep seeing this myth being carried out. Back here in reality, the kid started moving his feet, imposing his will, and forcing his way into the dirty areas of the ice. Are you insinuating Tortorella didn't preach that to him? How does one make so many mistakes in stone-age Tortorella land? You're lucky thats not really the case, because it would've meant hes an idiot hockey player. Its much better - again, here in reality - that something clicked and he started skating.

Kreisler really needs to be a consistent top six twenty goal scorer. The Rangers and their fans in any calculation of success counted on him being this guy.

Realistically what is Kreiders likely potential? Bill Guerin at 30 goals or more of a chip in 20 scorer?

Guerin without the mean streak, or as Viper has said, Erik Cole.

looks lindros esque when he plays that bull in a china shop style. kids gona be a beauty

oof...i just dont see that comparison at all. I think people forget just how the e-train played.

Lindros was physically imposing/dominant/intimidating. Kreider isnt. He's got a freakish natural skill set, but he doesnt scare people with his physical size or hitting, he scares people because he can shoot the puck like a laser and is insanely fast.

I think he's the complete package. Amazing physical tools, and a great head on his shoulders. I'm happy to see he's starting to get on a bit of a roll, I think he's going to have a very nice career.

That's one thing I've yet to see on the NHL level. If he can get that going he can be a great player.

Any outsider that wants to understand the quality of this forum, I would direct them to this thread. Then I would tell them to read it again in one weeks time.

Lindros had Crosby like scoring skills and Lucic like size, mean streak and fighting ability. Lindros career went haywire because of all the concussions but he handed out way more concussions than the 8 he got back. I think one reason the boarding major for nailing someone in the numbers into the boards is somewhat due to him. There were times when he seemed to be putting people in the hospital right and left and for several years he was the best forward in the league. That's a hell of a combination.

The Rangers always had Beukeboom on the ice against Lindros. Those two had wars. The battles between Staal and Ovechkin very, very pale by comparison. Beukeboom was huge and a big hitter and a very good fighter. I remember one playoff series that Beukeboom knocked 3 Panthers out of action. Johan Garpenlov who was hardly small braced himself to take a hit and Beukeboom went right through him--broke Garpenlov's leg. The Flyers were big and nasty but the Rangers were super tough as well.

one of the few guys that does what it takes to win. he knows how to draw penalties (yes, he definitely does dive as part of that), he crashes the crease, and imo if he sees an opportunity to take a guy out legally he's going to take it. this is a mentality that our team has lacked. while i hate diving, getting guys to play with that mentality is huge.

the physicality will come out more as he adjusts to the refs and learns who is going to call what (specifically charges w/ that size and speed), but this guy is sneaky as hell.

he's maintaining his stamina a LOT better this stint. he's not winded on the way to the bench anymore

we're still missing nash and callahan... we've got a lot of potential if this kid keeps showing up by the time they get back. imo the system is helping him

He has looked great these last few games.
Chris has not played a full season in the NHL or the AHL and people were writing him off already.
Way to go Kreids.

Been the Rangers best player the last three games. Not sure he will ever score enough goals too justify a top 6 role, but what an energy guy he has reinvented himself as.

I wonder if the team has enough room for Kreider and Hagelin going forward if the team adds the requisite fire power needed to add offense. I see Hagelin and Kreider as both third line LWs that can play line 2 in a pinch. May want to trade one of them for an upgrade at some point.

What mistakes? Kreider spent most of his time in the offensive zone NOT imposing his will or moving his feet. He seemed lost, he wasn't finding the open lanes. He wasn't moving well without the puck in the offensive zone. Defensively he was horrible. Tortorella wasn't wrong for being critical of Kreider's game, but the way he handled it was clearly not the best way for a kid like him to learn.

To get to a non-Ranger who was mentioned earlier in this thread, his WJC linemate Jeremy Morin is taking a similar path it seems. They were both big, physical forwards in that WJC who could also score points with the best of them. They finish their checks, forecheck hard, etc. etc. Morin is finally starting to put everything together in the Blackhawks organization this year (after going the OHL route, mind you), Kreider is putting it together here. You have to remember that these kids are 22, and at a junior/college level they can impose their will on guys based on their size and strength. No matter how strong you are compared to the next biggest 20 year old, you're not pushing around NHL players. Kreider's adjusting to playing with men instead of college boys.

Oh he's definitely done it at the NHL level, just hasn't scored a lot on it yet. His shot is very hard and has a quick release but he's not sniper level accurate with it. I hope he'll find his groove with it and start scoring some goals but I think as long as he can keep getting shots on net, that will come.

.

I think we are saying the same thing. Kreider's previous mistakes were all bred out of a lack of effort. Others would have you believe that mistakes within Torts system were what put Kreider in the doghouse. The reality is he was playing like a dog last season and, for the past 3 games at least, he hasn't.

A much better argument would be that AV's message has resonated better - but I find it awfully hard to believe that Tortorella wasn't telling Kreider to move his god damn feet.

I don't think it was a lack of effort. This is a kid that obviously busts his ass off the ice. Why would he be lazy on the ice?

I think it was more not knowing what to do, or not processing it quickly enough, rather than a lack of effort.
