It's about time for a Kreider thread

(I'm actually kind of surprised no one else has started one already.)

What we have seen from Kreider so far is why he was untouchable in the Nash trade. Yes, it's taken him a while to get going (and there is always the risk that he backslides - knock wood it doesn't happen), but when he is playing the way he has been the last few games, he is a true difference maker. The Rangers have had precious few of them on offense since '97. Nash can be one when he's healthy. Jagr was one his first few years here. Other than that, we haven't had a big strong, talented forward who can impose his will on the game.

In a way, the issue with Chris has always been that will - and his inability to find it. Some of it may have come from his early history at a fairly uncompetitive prep program. Some of it may (likely IMO) may have come from Torts's short leash. Some of it may simply have come from his natural demeanor.

What's been particularly encouraging about Kreider this year is not just the play we've seen over the last four games, but the steady progression that got him there. I've watched about half of the Pack games this season and I can tell you that this level of play is not new; he's been building towards this ever since his last day or so in camp. He was showing some more confidence at the very end of the preseason, but it really seemed to be his demotion that gave him a wake up call and enabled him to realize that he could be a force nearly every shift. And you can see the results now in his focus, how he closes in on the forecheck, how he hits with purpose, how he parks himself in front of the net and will not allow himself to be moved... heck, even his puckhandling and especially his passing is crisper.

I wanted him to get another weekend of games or two at the AHL level to make sure this change had "stuck" with him before they called him up - I was thinking the Montreal game at the earliest. But injuries forced the situation and, thankfully, it appears he hasn't missed a beat. This team still needs tinkering. It could still use more offense, it could use more speed, it could simply use more players suited to playing AV's style. And Chris needs to keep up this level of play. But he is a core piece. This is a guy you build around.

This is the way he played in college in his last couple of seasons. He is just a major force when he is moving his feet and not overthinking things.

Big power forwards take longer to develop. He has been a revelation for sure and I hope he keeps it up.
 
He has been a complete beast, lately; all over the ice! I'm so glad it looks like that $200 jersey wasn't a complete waste!!! I love this kid, and SO desperately want him to do well. Keep it up!

In before, "wouldn't trade him for Crosby."

Hopefully this is the new CK for good. He needs to look at what he's done the last two games and recognize this should happen every night, off nights withstanding.
 
For what it's worth, this is what he played like in his most recent Hartford stint. He was the only player down there that truly looked ready to take the next step. He's finally comfortable and confident.

The 2012 playoffs might have been the worst thing for the kid. It made him appear farther along developmentally than he was, and probably established unrealistic expectations. Most kids require some real seasoning before they're ready.

Sometimes it seems like he's been around forever. It's important to remember that he's 22 and has played 27 regular season games.

This. I would never question this kid's heart or effort. He just needed time to find his game at this level.

I said it in the other thread, but AV is turning Kreider into our own version of Kesler and its wonderful. That body and strength in front of net is a difference maker on the PP.
 
He has looked like a 20+ goal guy the last few games. Very promising.

yea this needs to continue for me to be really happy but its going good lately.

Kreider in the top 6 when everyone is healthy makes the team so much better. If they can go with a combo of Richards, Stepan, Brassard, Kreider, Nash, Callahan and then shift Hagelin to a 3rd line it makes the team a ton deeper
 
I've been holding off on posting much on Kreider because I'ma bit superstitious.

But what a difference some confidence makes. I really hope he keeps playing like this. And as others have said this really was a gradual progression from the end of camp in Hartford.

He is starting to slow the game down. Not always going 90 mph but picking and choosing his bursts. Slowing the pace down where appropriate. That has helped him make plays.

Lastly some credit to Zucc and Stepan , especially for last night. Playing with pass first linemates who can also control the puck definitely helps Kreider.

Kesler has more of a mean streak and is more chippy and injury prone as of late. id love Kesler on this team.. if Kreider would add a mean streak to his game, then who knows, maybe he can be the Rangers 1st line power forward we have all been waiting for... i dont think he is the same type of player as Kesler but he does has potential to be that good..
 
he's looking like a big version of Hagelin on the forecheck right now and was absolutely wrecking all of the Isles D last night. But he's better than Hagelin in front of the net and has a better shot. I'd like to see him scoring more with his shot but I'll take goals from him any way they can happen.

I'm also really impressed with his handling of the puck and passing lately. He just seems to have the confidence to hold onto it and look for plays now instead of moving it along to a teammate just to keep the puck moving

e: he does actually look like a power forward without a nasty streak right now, in that he's hitting players on the forecheck and using his body to take the puck away, go to the front of the net, etc
 
One thing that hasn't been commented on as much is he's not just shooting more--he's making nice plays--setting guys up. He seems to have found some chemistry with Stepan for one who continues to not finish them but Kreider could easily have more than just the 2 points in 4 games.
 
Kreider looks like the best player on this team right now, and I don't see that changing.

He's always been an excellent playmaker.

People that didnt actually watch him figured he couldn't pass. Fact of the matter is his touch passes and intuitiveness went way over the heads of his teammates at BC. College players don't expect to make a pass on a rush and get it right back.
