Would ideally have liked another 2025 1st, but the 2026 one will have to do. The Bruins are trying to re-tool and by the looks of it they see this as a 2-3 year project rather than trying to bounce straight back in one year with minimal disruption, and I think that's the right call. The roster had too many flaws to essentially just run it back and hope, so respect to the front office for taking a higher risk, hopefully higher reward approach.
Frederic, Brazeau, Coyle and Carlo were all guys I wanted moved, the returns are good, so zero complaints there. I'm not a big fan of Mittelstadt, fear that it won't work out, but I get the intent and the potential upside, so can only see what happens. As for the other players added, have always liked Lauko, Joki is a shrug but sure why not, the rest I don't know enough about to have an informed opinion. Main thing is the picks and cap space cleared, so happy with that.
The Marchand trade is not ideal but end of the day I have no problem with it. If the rumors regarding what he wants for his next contract are true, I wouldn't have signed him, and clearly Sweeney agrees. Too much money and term. So now you're left with 3 options - hope Brad lowers his price, let him walk for free, or get at least something for him via trade. Again I would have chosen the last option, even while knowing that I'm going to get less than the player is really worth. So I can hardly complain when that's exactly what Don did.
I like Brad, he's been a great servant of this team, a worthy captain, but he's never been a favorite of mine compared to some others. So while this is a sad day, I accept the business reality and can only wish him the best in Florida. Don't hate the Panthers as much as some here either, so perhaps that helps.
Overall, very good job by Sweeney. The hardest parts are yet to come, but he's done the right thing here so kudos. Now we see what the offseason brings.
