Even though we gave him away, the 08 Draft netted us Spurgeon as well. Those two drafts (08 and 09) along with the Leddy/Boychuk trade completely transformed this entire franchise.

I can't get too upset about the Trivino, Niemi and Petrov picks in 08. Trivino was supposedly a first round consideration at some point, Niemi IIRC was a project and Petrov was highly touted but had the Russian factor hanging over his head.

So what are ho sangs totals since the benching?? Seems like he's been lighting it up and 29 points in 43 games is not half bad for a 20 year old

Just checked in on big Griff.
He is calling Bakersfield his permanent home. No NHL games this year.
Taylor Beck leading them with 47 points . We had him
Also Joel " the wrecker " Rechlicz still lacing them up.He had a great fight vs Cote back in March 09.
The Rochester vs Bridgeport replay is on MSG right now . Just staring the 3rd

Man their division is like the Metro...top 5 teams in division in the top 10 in the A. Sound Tigers would be leading a few other divisions, IIRCM

Shame not only lays in the players selected around him, but the fact that he was more or less rated that highly.

If he was a reach I could see a lot of hostility about it, but the head scratcher is, a lot of people had Reinhart ranked right where he was selected.

I notice people are calling Reinhart somewhat of a reach but that is plain wrong. I think all agencies had him right where he was picked (give a spot or two) and they all had the Islanders taking him as well. At the time we were screaming for a blue chip defence prospect and he was it. There are always concerns over prospects and in his case they turned out to be right.

Barzal with 25 points in his last 10 games. Only 1 goal though, I would like to see him score some more goals.

From my memory, I don't remember it being a colossal reach but some were surprised he went at 4. As you said, you never really know.

If I remember correctly, he was a bit of a late riser, which may be why people thought it was a reach. I think he was anywhere from 4-8 in most rankings at the end, so we took him on the high end of where he was projected.

The 2nd and 3rd rounds of the 08 draft still make me think what if.

Could have had Josi, Stepan, and Hamonic in the 2nd and possibly Henrique and Holtby in the 3rd

In round 4 we also had a shot at both Brodie and Nyquist as well.

We did get Martin in the 5th? We got a lot out of him but that could have been an incredible draft. Josi and Hamonic in the 2nd round alone would have been insane.

You can never have a perfect draft though. 10 out of the 30 players drafted in the 2nd round became NHL regulars. We went 1 for 3, which is about average. And Hamonic is one of the better ones.

If you look at the 4th round, only 4 players became NHL regulars. How much can you fault a GM for missing? I think 15 players from rounds 4-7 became NHL regulars. We got 2 of them in Martin and Spurgeon. That has to be conisdered excellent drafting.

I think it is easy to get caught up in what could have been. The only draft I think you can really do that with was 2003, where the misses were so few and far between. That one draft really was a franchise-changer, and not in a good way for us.

You have to consider what you get from a draft, not what you missed out on. Literally every team misses out on players in every draft. Look at any player drafted late that you consider a steal and realize that same team didn't pick the player multiple times before that.

As you said, you never know about prospects. Thing is with Griff, he was a defensive defensemen. Even if he was rated in that spot, there are more defensemen in the NHL like the player selected 5th, Morgan Reilly, a puck-moving offensive D-man who sees the ice and contributes on the backend. With Griff, we unfortunately got a looks like tarzan plays like Jane scenario. I believe scouts did say in evaluation that he did not to be more physical at his position.

Not to mention, Garth went all D in 2012. We got our defensive d-man with Pelech in the same draft. We drafted mayfield the year before. Another player of the same mold. Yea maybe Reinhardt showed more promise with his size and shot but at #4 there should be emphasis on skill. You can get the defensive d-man later in the draft as we did.

No doubt that moving Reinhart not only had to do with his perceived (and since continued) stunted development, but also with your point here.

I agree thoroughly with the thought on going for defensive Dmen later.

At this point, we can only say that Pelech and Mayfield have clearly surpassed Reinhart, shown by no less than they're being in the NHL while Reinhart can't even beat out the likes of Matthew Benning, Brandon Davidson, and Eric Gryba for a lower line NHL shift in Edmonton.

In general though, as odd and unorthodox that all Dman draft was in 2012, the top 2 picks have been moved in what were arguably the best two trades Snow has made (Pokka+ for Leddy and then 16 {Barzal} + pick 32 for Reinhart) while Pelech is looking like a bottom 3 defensive Dman with a nice first pass. Graham and Leduc are signed and in the system (not looking like future NHLers and arguably not looking like guys who should have contracts) while Somerby and Bischoff are up for a possible signing this summer. I suspect no less than 1 of the 2 will be signed, with Somerby being the front runner.

I have enjoyed Mayfield's play of late. Both he and Pelech have made strong arguments for a regular depth role on this team. Most NHL teams that make runs at a cup have guys like these who can adequately step in when other Dmen go down.

Put simply, I haven't missed Hamonic in the least - and we're competing wonderfully while fully able to let Pulock be part of something special in BPort. Let's not forget that Pulock has already been injured quite a bit in his young career and there's the expansion draft to worry about. I feel like Snow 'n co. have been juggling things well and no-one can argue with the results since Cappy was fired. And honestly, the team was already turning the corner over the final 10 games or so of Cappy's tenure.

Bracken Kearns called up...prince to IR.

Before everyone starts clamoring "Why not JHS?" maybe it's because they view Zeeker's injury as short term. They don't want ho-Sang as the 13th man here when he's thriving in the Bridge.

Keanrs and Gionta with Kulemin will be the short term 4th line, and Kearns will shift back to 13th forward when Prince/Zeeker/Clutterbuck s able to return. He'll then be sent back down once 2 of those 3 are back, hopefully soon.

Agreed. The Isles are in the playoff race, it's no environment to try developing offensive players in bottom-6 roles. Kearns is the right call.
