So Räty wasn't allowed to attend the WJC but he has continued to play well in Finland, registering an assist today in a 2-1 road win against his own club, Kärpät. His current team has the 2nd best form in a 10-game span with Räty being one of the leading players.
As Isles fans, gotta love seeing this. And can't help but feel, with all due respect to BT, that sometimes giving the kids some more rope to prove themselves is a good thing.

Man, did Karpat ever do us a favor by not utilizing this kid to his full potential. We got him at incredible value in the second round.

I can't get over how much I loved watching him in preseason. He just knows what he's doing out there and he's so slick with the puck. Really excited to watch his development.

It would be nice to see Barry give the youngins some more burn, especially with this season being thrown to the dogs. I think this year we're starting to see how Barry isn't a perfect coach. We love him, and I'd love for him to be our coach moving forward, but he's gotta be a little more flexible with the young players.

Not sure how this is possible.

He's got 34 games of pro hockey under his belt.

As I've understood it, any pro or major junior hockey makes you uneligible for college hockey.

That had crossed my mind as well. He’s playing in the USHL which is fine but he was in pro leagues in Czech. I’d like to look into this further.

Maybe it’s the last league you’re in? Because he’s in the USHL currently that’s a possible loophole?

Outsider coming in for a question.

Your 2015 draft pick Misha Song is supposed to be playing for Cornell for the past 4 years but hasn't played a game yet. Did he retire from hockey or have a personal issue?

Misha Song at eliteprospects.com

Just curious. Thanks in advance.

He was never a legitimate prospect/player. He was a vanity pick for owner Charles Wang and likely his efforts to grow the game in China.

He should be playing on the same team as goalie draft pick Cody Rosen. Another out of left-field pick likely due to off-ice interests.

Thanks for the feedback.

So, is he really with Cornell? Practicing but not getting into games?

Edit: Cornell does not list him on the roster anymore. He was listed last year but the season was cancelled. The prior two seasons he played one exhibition game and dressed for 2 reg season games but did not play so he has 0 NCAA games.

Not sure… totally fell off my radar as he wasn’t someone we took seriously around here.

Only news update on him was a promo piece from last January for the upcoming Olympics. Would seem that he has been strictly practice squad up until this year.

He also doesn’t show up on this year’s Cornell roster. Did last year

Now I’m curious to see if he is still playing and where. Anyway FYI (but not really an informative article)…

China's winter sports trailblazers: 1st NHL-drafted Chinese Song Andong

EDIT: I see you also checked Cornell’s roster while I was replying.

Also, any chance you’re an Oiler fan? Maybe we can just square away the inevitable McDavid for Andong “Misha” Song and second pick now? :sarcasm:

He got into the college on a athletic scholarship but likely didn't make the team, he is either on the club/JV version of the team or just listed because of the scholarship. It was purely a political pick to get some positive press for the NHL in China.

LinkedIn says he is graduating Cornell this year with a degree in Hospitality Management and was most recently an investment banking intern at a company called Nomura.

He was just drafted to be an ambassador for the game in China and was never a legitimate NHL prospect.

Since when did Ivy League schools give out athletic scholarships?

what even is our top 10 for prospects anymore? feels like we have like 4 NHL prospects at best, and 2 are probably staying in Europe for the future (Wilde, Ishakov)

We really need more picks soon. The farm is the weakest its ever been

Not even close to right. We had years where the 5th-best prospect was barely AHL level if you go back to the early-mid 2000's.

And there are always a few surprises.

Even if you are not counting Wahlstrom, Dobson, Bellows and Salo (the last two can still qualify for Rookie of the Year voting and all of them have a LONG career ahead of them):

Ratu looks like a home run
Holmstrom will be 3rd line at worst, think Pat Flatley
Hutton proved he can play 3rd pair right now, he's got no opening so far to get into the lineup.
Bolduc showed enough to get his ELC pretty early
Dufour is looking like the biggest steal of his draft year
And if you want a really interesting possibility we'll see if Krygier gets signed out of college as another stay-at-home LD.

Outside of these we have some interesting possibilities the last two years.

That is an atrocious list.
