The only way I see Bailey gone is if NYI waive him in order to keep Beauvillier. I feel certain NYI would have no interest in Yakupov.

Bailey is the definition of an expendable player. Invisible on the ice 80% of the time and then has a 1 goal 3 assist game so his defenders can go "SEE HE CONTRIBUTES".

He's a Cody Hodgson, or a Sam Gagner, the only difference is that the front office has made a commitment to ensuring he has a roster spot with the Isles year after year after year after year after year after year.

1-for-1 for Yak? Sure. Conditional pick? Sure. Players of Bailey's 0.5 PPG are a dime a dozen in today's NHL - you're better off signing the yearly Radim Vrbata player to a 1-year deal than continue to "develop" Josh.

what metric is Yak a better player? Yak is a threat in both ends of the ice unfortunately he's more of a threat on his own net.

Oilers take this deal and run away laughing. Yakupov joins the KHL after this contract.

Highly doubt the Oilers give up on a former #1 overall pick for Josh *** Bailey for 2 reasons...

1. Yakupov still has potential and reasonably high ceiling if developed. He turns 23 tomorrow. He may never be a 40+ goal scorer, but at least he still has the potential become a better player (at least offensively) than Bailey.

2. The Oilers aren't going to give up on him this early, thus admitting a giant mistake that set the organization back by picking him with the 1st overall pick, even in a weak draft class and to boot, sell him off for an expendable who is almost equally as disappointing due to draft position.

It makes absolutely ZERO sense for the Oilers and all the sense in the world for the Islanders. You put him next to Tavares and you see what the two of them can do together. With Tavares being Tavares, chances are, they could get more out of Yakupov.

The only reason you play Yak with Tavares is so that you can pump up his stats so you can trade him for someone useful. Moulson, Okposo, Vanek...Yakupov?

The Isles are probably more concerned about actually winning games rather than trying to pump up the value of Yakupov to get a better draft pick. The Isles have some promising young forwards of their own who are cost controlled and expansion/waiver exempt.

Bad deal for both teams.

The Oilers are losing the player with more potential, who is younger (and therefore further from UFA) and cheaper. I think Bailey is a better all around player right now, but not good enough to be worth giving up Yak's potential and taking on extra money.

For the Isles, they have lots of young, unproven forwards. They have Strome, Barzal, Dal Colle, Ho Sang. They all have similar upside to Yak. What Bailey gives them, OTOH, is versatility. He can line up at any forward position and play on any line. He isn't a top-line player, but he can play there short-term if injuries occur. He can kill penalties. I would rather keep Bailey as a 4th liner/13th forward, even at his salary, than trade him for a one-dimensional winger who hasn't proven he's an upgrade offensively over the Isles current forwards.

Well we traded Moulson for Vanek, Vanek for Collberg, and Okposo for nothing, so clearly this is a strategy that has been really working for the Isles.

Yeah, it would have been a great idea to trade Okposo when we were trying to win a playoff series. That 1st round pick and alright prospect would have really helped :shakehead
