Islanders not renewing Lou Lamoriello’s contract

Equal chances, really. Isles ownership is hands off so it'll be whatever the new hire determines necessary. I'd lean towards a "retool" rather than a rebuild, just because of the amount of no-move clauses + having Sorokin kind of makes it hard to fully tank.

What the new hire needs to have as a top priority, is revamping the entire pro scouting and development departments. No team has hit on less picks outside of the 1st round than Lou's Isles.
Just look at their pieces.

Ciziskas, Lee, Pageau 2 and 1 years left (mid 30's)

Pelech, Pullock, Mayfield, like 4-5 years left (early 30's)

Horvat, Barzal, Sokokin like 6 years left (28-30)

Romanov/Dobson are 25 but 2 and 1 year left before UFA.

The last pair likely are not sticking around for a 5 year rebuild. Would likely use their soon to be ufa status to get traded out. No point keeping the trio in their prime if you are spending their remaining prime years rebuilding. How many of their early 30's Dmen can you trade for value? Should be able to move off the trio with limited term left.

I feel like next year might be an evaluation year. Minimal changes on the roster and Roy gets his choice of assistants. New GM/AGM as well as hockey ops department gets to see what they have from within the organization to make changes.

New GM should be permitted to hire a new HC. I don’t see Roy returning.

Some change is needed. Ideally start with the veteran trio in their mid 30’s in the off season. Aim to move one of the trio of veteran Dmen at least. Roster needs a refresh at a minimum.

It does need a refresh but who knows what they’ll do. Ideally a quality president of hockey ops then go down the line. Thankfully they finally decided to make the change.

Bravo. The worst thing they could have done is wait, make bad offseason moves and screw themselves even more. Go into the offseason with a new plan.

Relieved. I had less interest this past season I think than any season since the last pre-Tavares year. Weird season, and I've watched them all since 1973-74.

I'm glad this is over, but appreciate the return to respectability Lou's first 3 years brought. People forget how lost Isles all were were those late teens years. He got Trotz here and the team had an identity. I think Barry walked away ("fired") as he knew he took this low talent bunch as far is they would get, and it was too stressful

But Lou kept going to the same dry well the last 4 years. Congratulations on your retirement. Like Willie Mays, hung around 2 years too long.

As the entire org is getting a review suspect his son is gone too, after a historically bad season in Bridgeport.

Happy that Friedman notes there is a lot of interest in the job. Hope they get this right. Next year probably a re-set of sorts.

About time NYI joined the 21st century. Hopefully they don't f*** up the GM hire.... Roy getting fired needs to be the next thing that happens.

Hair, beards, and jersey numbers over 40 are so back.
I’m old school in that I agree with Lou on the number unless the play has a good reason for the number. If your fav player coming up was Hedman, let the kid wear 77. Same if the player was rick Nash, let them wear 61.

It got out of hand when in NJ multiple players got called up and all ended up wearing like 22 when they did.

Engvall is one of the two big reasons I would have fired Lou. Duclair is the other.
You missed a few items.

Signing Mayfield and Varly to extensions.

Keeping his inept son Chris to be GM of the AHL franchise.

Falling in love and giving contracts to anyone with ties to the Devils, coaches or players.

Think Lou got tired of his job. Let the guy retire and enjoy his life already.

I want Patrick Roy as GM for the lols. As per Louis Domingue, he wants to do everything. He'll clean the bathrooms too if he has to. After all, that's what made him the greatest goalie of all-time.

Thought for sure his career was done when he left New Jersey, then thought for sure his career was done when he left Toronto. Not making the same mistake again,

Man looking at Isles roster and system

That is very undesirable job

Honestly if they are promoting from within it feels like that GM is being setup to fail

That team needs to blow it up and go full rebuild

As a Patriots fan, often brought up Lou as an example of how ugly things would get at the end of the Belichick tenure. There is something about these legendary management types that makes them completely inflexible in their old age. Still, Isles got three fun seasons out of it - but you might be like the Devils where you curse him for the next 5.

Retool not a rebuild. Barzal, Dobson, Sorokin, Romanov is a good core foundation. Simon Holmstrom is emerging as a solid piece, first 20 goal season in his 3rd season, just 23 years old. Cal Ritchie and Cole Eiserman as top prospects is a good start to a youth movement soon. Danny Nelson is also in the wings, Isaiah George looked solid when called up on D this season, 3 first round picks in the next two drafts (Top 10 this year) should help further. The right moves need to be made yes, but a WASH-esque retool should be the model for the NYI.
