Islanders not renewing Lou Lamoriello’s contract

Never won anything after they brought in a salary cap. See ya, Nosferatu.
His teams were in one Stanley Cup finals and two conference finals. I can think of several teams that can’t match that. But then I get the feeling sometimes that people of this forum think every year has 15 Stanley Cup winners.
Still there comes a time in everyone’s life when it is time to step away and let the young elephants take over. Lamariello had a helluva run.

This is gold. I spit out my coffee at work.

I'm always blown away by the number of trade protected contracts the Islanders have. Even if they are trying to retool, their options for player movement in the summer have an additional hurdle by getting the player's approval. Add in how barren Bridgeport is... heh.

seeing nyi with a competent gm would be crazy. hope they finally get a top notch front office.

Pretty diabolical that they informed Lou of this before the season even ended. The cone of silence remains real.

Time to see if Collins is worth his salt. He's got a lot of business and management experience, but this is for sure a hire he needs to nail.

Also, can we please hear that Lou's nepo son has been removed from Bridgeport? Having the worst season in AHL history, it should be a given he's sacked, but...

Now he can go and wake up early, drive slow in traffic and make everyone else late.

Didn't Roy leave Colorado because he wanted some sort of GM abilities/control ? Think he's an option here and if he doesn't get it, he might walk ? Maybe I'm misremembering why he left Colorado.
I don't think he will be the pick based on the news of the search they are running, but I suppose its possible.

"Isles ownership representatives, including Operating Partner John Collins, have started conducting a series of talks with executives about potential top roles in hockey operations. This includes discussions with former longtime GMs, one-time GMs, highly-regarded assistant GMs ready for the next step, and former players. This is very early in the process and may take a while.

As word spread throughout the industry about Scott Malkin considering major changes and wanting to canvass opinions, a long list of established executives and rising stars in the business have been trying (and some are still trying) to get in the door to make their pitch to Malkin and the teams’ other owners. In some cases, through recommendations made by Collins or to Collins, NYI owners have proactively reached out and scheduled early talks with some intriguing candidates.

With the Islanders’ first-rate facilities and owners known for investing in their team and letting their GMs do their jobs with minimal interference, the Islanders’ job is an attractive one."

I think it's more likely Roy either gets the boot when the new GM is hired or is kept on for another year and actually allowed to pick his coaching staff. What a concept!

The fact he didn't trade Palmieri at the deadline shows how completely out of touch he is and he should have been let go years ago

Does this make a rebuild more or less likely ?

Equal chances, really. Isles ownership is hands off so it'll be whatever the new hire determines necessary. I'd lean towards a "retool" rather than a rebuild, just because of the amount of no-move clauses + having Sorokin kind of makes it hard to fully tank.

What the new hire needs to have as a top priority, is revamping the entire pro scouting and development departments. No team has hit on less picks outside of the 1st round than Lou's Isles.

You can applaud Lou Lamoriello for the job he did in resurrecting the New York Islanders, and concede that the time has come to bring in a new broom. A new GM can (and hopefully will) clean up the mess made in the last couple of years. If Anthony Duclair and Pierre Engvall are elsewhere before training camp, the new GM will be off to a good start.
