Islanders not renewing Lou Lamoriello’s contract

I suspect Roy will move to this role assuming he wants it. He indicated when he was hired last year his future aspirations would likely be more as a GM

I respect the career he had. I don't respect his last couple of years JFC what was that.

He had a good run, but it’s time. Will be thankful for what he did for the organization.
He brought stability and credibility to them. A pair of Final 4 runs in 2020 and 2021. See who they hire. That should set the direction of the team over the next few years.

They are currently pretty tied up with contracts.
Pelech, Pullock, Mayfield on D. Barzal, Horvat up front. Sorokin in net all have term.

Dobson/Romanov on D, did bridge deals, so nearing UFA.

Lee, Pageau 1 year left.

Limited young talent coming up in the 20-23 year range as they moved a bunch of picks in the 2020's for those 2 final 4 runs. Feeling that hole now.

See whether the new GM thinks he can tweak the roster and get them into the playoffs or whether he intends on making a lot of changes to the roster. Feels like they will also part ways with Roy as HC.

If so, that would bring us to 8 HC changes since the start of 24/25 season.

They were never serious contenders for anything. He handed out stupid contracts and acquired middling players.

Seattle must be kicking themselves that they already hired a new GM yesterday. If they could go back in time a day and not hire Botterill, then go back another 20 years to where Lou was relevant, they would be set.

If he wants to stay in hockey he seems like he would be good as a special advisor or something like that. Not sure why he has the need to run the show. He can't possibly feel comfortable and confident with operating with how the game, players, and general society is now compared to his heyday. He must be constantly be shaking his head being like 'it didn't used to be like this'

The thing about the (early) LL years is that it showed that NYI could have done a lot more with the talent it had if only NYI had fixed their coaching and goaltending issues.

The 2013-2014 Islanders were the most talented playoff miss I'd ever seen as a NYI fan. LL had his limits (especially older LL), but nothing like that would ever happen to him. He came in, dealt with coaching and goaltending, and it made a huge difference.
