Great post(s).
The important thing to remember is that when the Islanders signed the lease in 1985, scoreboard weren't what they were today: capable of displaying hundreds of advertisements during a game.
There was no advertising on the boards or the ice.
Basically, every other team in hockey had a large increase in revenue streams as technology and "fan entertainment" entered sports arenas. The Islanders got none. That's why they fell behind.
As for A-1. A-1 is a sponsor. The deal means nothing. Signing a deal with Coors to be "The Official Beer of the Islanders" doesn't mean they're moving to Golden, Colorado. Or Blackberry as the Official Smart Phone of the Islanders" doesn't mean we're ticketed for Hamilton.
I would agree if the Isles signed with Coors or Blackberry it would mean nothing in respect to their possible relocation . But with their arena future so uncertain, why did they partner up with a moving company? I think in many ways it's a good move, but are the Isles prepared to pay an 8 figure penalty if they decide to terminate their lease with Nassau County before 2015?
Well if Wang was thinking of paying close to 2 billion dollars on the Lighthouse project, Wang should be able to pay out an 8 figure penalty (around 20 or 30 million dollars) if he decides to get out of the lease with Nassau County in 2013. The lease ends on 2015. Wang would probably not want to consider getting out of the Nassau County lease until 2013 at the earliest.Do they even have that much money?
(Yes, this is a serious question.)
i fully agree with your first sentence. i dont know how it will end or what will happen with the tribe but im guessing things will be pretty quiet until 2013ish. and then things will get interesting.I don't think Wang leaves LI. The cable deal is one of the most lucrative if not the most lucrative around. I believe it sits in around 30 million a year. Plus now that he has control of the arena thanks to Suozzi he should be in position to make more money. Ultimately I think it will get done. Probably with some shady politics. Mangano a republicans wants the NYI to stay. Murrary also a republican seems she can care less about working together. Unless Mangano sweetens the pot for her or her district.
Part of me hopes the Shinnecock tribe builds their casino there so that the TOH is held out of the process as much as possible. Then I hope Murrary has to drive past that casino EVERYDAY and as she drives by, thinks to herself, "Boy I should have went with Wang's Lighthouse Project."
Kansas City Inlanders are close approaching![]()
Just how bad is the situation on the Island? are they more in danger of relocating than teams like Phoenix and Atlanta? I just see this getting much much worse before it gets better. I think it's safe to say that their fans are beginning to get to the point of "finally being fed up"
am i overreacting?
Isles aren't moving. They're locked into a brutal lease until 2015, only offset a bit by a lucrative cable contract that goes beyond that.

NY business pundit looks at pros/cons of moving team to Queens.
There've been rumors for several months, that the leaders in the Republican party were trying to get Murray to leave her post.Supposedly, they've offered up a job on the bench.
Her hardline stance of not in my backyard,is fine for the ToH since the ToH is reportedly in good financial shape, but the rest of the County can't make that claim.
There's speculation that NY State could take over County finances if they can't get their budget together. So the pressure is definitely on the local pols.

UNIONDALE, New York — New York state postponed a decision on Thursday on whether to seize control of the finances of Nassau County, one of the wealthiest in the nation, and asked the county to prove its budget is balanced.
The state-appointed Nassau County Interim Finance Authority is considering whether to impose a control period over the county's 2011 budget for the fiscal year that begins January 1.
If Kate Murray leaves her job as the TOH supervisor, do you think the Isles chances of staying in Nassau is greater? With Nassau in bad financial shape, the new lease in the Coliseum may be less revenue friendly for the Islanders (the Nassau County owns the Coliseum).
After Murray cut something like 75% of the project and made her anti-development comments,Wang's refused to go back to the table with her.
Her own party leaders are the ones pressuring her to leave.I have to think they would choose a replacement who thinks along their lines.
Wang's biggest concern is probably getting his housing and retail.I believe the cash strapped County's biggest concern, is getting the project built using Wang's money and having new jobs/tax revenue.
With the official Lighthouse site no longer available, do you think Wang still wants to get a project done around the Coliseum?
Wang said:"Obviously if it doesn't work in Long Island, I'd like to be close enough so I can commute to the games," Wang said. "I go to all the home games as best as I can. So if it's Queens, that's great. Suffolk, great."
The Islanders have two, maybe three full seasons to become a very good team because logic would dictate that Charles Wang needs to know by the summer of 2013 where his hockey club will be playing in October of 2015. An arena in Queens or Suffolk (or anywhere else) can be built in two years. If three years were needed, Wang - despite comments about not playing in the arena for one more second than they have to - could work out a one-year deal for his club to play at the NVMC in 2015-16.
I'm saying that wang takes mass transit.

Botta argues that team needs to improve play, to increase STH base, to prove they should stay around, and where they might be after the 14-15 season when current lease ends....
