Islanders -- Lighthouse project

Great post(s).

The important thing to remember is that when the Islanders signed the lease in 1985, scoreboard weren't what they were today: capable of displaying hundreds of advertisements during a game.

There was no advertising on the boards or the ice.

Basically, every other team in hockey had a large increase in revenue streams as technology and "fan entertainment" entered sports arenas. The Islanders got none. That's why they fell behind.

As for A-1. A-1 is a sponsor. The deal means nothing. Signing a deal with Coors to be "The Official Beer of the Islanders" doesn't mean they're moving to Golden, Colorado. Or Blackberry as the Official Smart Phone of the Islanders" doesn't mean we're ticketed for Hamilton.

I would agree if the Isles signed with Coors or Blackberry it would mean nothing in respect to their possible relocation . But with their arena future so uncertain, why did they partner up with a moving company? I think in many ways it's a good move, but are the Isles prepared to pay an 8 figure penalty if they decide to terminate their lease with Nassau County before 2015?

Do they even have that much money?

(Yes, this is a serious question.)

Well if Wang was thinking of paying close to 2 billion dollars on the Lighthouse project, Wang should be able to pay out an 8 figure penalty (around 20 or 30 million dollars) if he decides to get out of the lease with Nassau County in 2013. The lease ends on 2015. Wang would probably not want to consider getting out of the Nassau County lease until 2013 at the earliest.

I don't think Wang leaves LI. The cable deal is one of the most lucrative if not the most lucrative around. I believe it sits in around 30 million a year. Plus now that he has control of the arena thanks to Suozzi he should be in position to make more money. Ultimately I think it will get done. Probably with some shady politics. Mangano a republicans wants the NYI to stay. Murrary also a republican seems she can care less about working together. Unless Mangano sweetens the pot for her or her district.

Part of me hopes the Shinnecock tribe builds their casino there so that the TOH is held out of the process as much as possible. Then I hope Murrary has to drive past that casino EVERYDAY and as she drives by, thinks to herself, "Boy I should have went with Wang's Lighthouse Project."
i fully agree with your first sentence. i dont know how it will end or what will happen with the tribe but im guessing things will be pretty quiet until 2013ish. and then things will get interesting.
Kansas City Inlanders are close approaching :sarcasm:

wont happen.

that article was pretty pointless...nothing anyone didnt already know....kinda lost credibility when he suggested al montoya as a play to solve their goaltending woes.....dp has been dreadful but i hope he realizes roloson is on the team too.....the least of our problems is goaltending (assuming roloson plays the starting minutes he has earned)

Just how bad is the situation on the Island? are they more in danger of relocating than teams like Phoenix and Atlanta? I just see this getting much much worse before it gets better. I think it's safe to say that their fans are beginning to get to the point of "finally being fed up"

am i overreacting?

Isles aren't moving. They're locked into a brutal lease until 2015, only offset a bit by a lucrative cable contract that goes beyond that.

I was pretty sure their lease was re-negotiated and is no longer "brutal". Might not be great...but it isn't the horrendous lease that it used to be.

The Islanders will probably move to Queens. It makes sense and it broadens the fan-base for the team and they can get into a partnership with the Mets' SportsNet New York (SNY) channel if they decided they wanted to opt-out of the MSG deal.

Gain new (semi) fans. It's sometimes tough and/or expensive to get Rangers tickets. If I can't find tickets, I'll sometimes go catch a Devils game in Newark. It's a pretty quick ride and the Rock is a really nice arena. If the Islanders could get an arena with the amenities of Citi Field (beautiful field and great food) or the Rock, people would visit, not necessarily to support the Islanders, but to see some hockey at a decent price. Especially since the Willets Point area is very public transportation accessible, unlike Nassau Coliseum.

HAHAHAHAHA............ are they kidding ???? The Icelanders just upped their game day "cheap tickets" to $30 - $40......... A new arena would offer cheaper tickets?? really ????

I just talked to EJ Hraek and Don LaGreca today about the Islanders arena situation. He told me there is no arena plan in place between the Isles and the Mets, only discussions. However, if the rumor that the Mets hiring Jones Lang Laselle to do a feasibility study for an Islanders arena near Citi Field is true, would EJ be correct on his assessment?

There've been rumors for several months, that the leaders in the Republican party were trying to get Murray to leave her post.Supposedly, they've offered up a job on the bench.
Her hardline stance of not in my backyard,is fine for the ToH since the ToH is reportedly in good financial shape, but the rest of the County can't make that claim.

There's speculation that NY State could take over County finances if they can't get their budget together. So the pressure is definitely on the local pols.

UNIONDALE, New York — New York state postponed a decision on Thursday on whether to seize control of the finances of Nassau County, one of the wealthiest in the nation, and asked the county to prove its budget is balanced.

The state-appointed Nassau County Interim Finance Authority is considering whether to impose a control period over the county's 2011 budget for the fiscal year that begins January 1.

If Kate Murray leaves her job as the TOH supervisor, do you think the Isles chances of staying in Nassau is greater? With Nassau in bad financial shape, the new lease in the Coliseum may be less revenue friendly for the Islanders (the Nassau County owns the Coliseum).

After Murray cut something like 75% of the project and made her anti-development comments,Wang's refused to go back to the table with her.

Her own party leaders are the ones pressuring her to leave.I have to think they would choose a replacement who thinks along their lines.

Wang's biggest concern is probably getting his housing and retail.I believe the cash strapped County's biggest concern, is getting the project built using Wang's money and having new jobs/tax revenue.

With the official Lighthouse site no longer available, do you think Wang still wants to get a project done around the Coliseum?

I think so.

Building and owning even a scaled down Lighthouse project, would bring Wang bigger profits then simply moving to Queens or Brooklyn and being a tenant.

Wang said:
"Obviously if it doesn't work in Long Island, I'd like to be close enough so I can commute to the games," Wang said. "I go to all the home games as best as I can. So if it's Queens, that's great. Suffolk, great."

:biglaugh:

Barclay's Center would be the best location from the perspective of mass transit.

(I'm saying that wang takes mass transit)

Botta argues that team needs to improve play, to increase STH base, to prove they should stay around, and where they might be after the 14-15 season when current lease ends....

The Islanders have two, maybe three full seasons to become a very good team because logic would dictate that Charles Wang needs to know by the summer of 2013 where his hockey club will be playing in October of 2015. An arena in Queens or Suffolk (or anywhere else) can be built in two years. If three years were needed, Wang - despite comments about not playing in the arena for one more second than they have to - could work out a one-year deal for his club to play at the NVMC in 2015-16.

Of course. Whenever he's not pooling with Garth in their shared eco-friendly SmartCar. The tunnel & wind wakes from trucks on the LIE can be a bit dicey, and thank God for the sunroof & ski goggles, otherwise Snow wouldnt fit (the bugs arent bad, but lit cigarette butts at 60mph?). Whatevers best for the environment. :)

The new revised sublease ends in 2015 so if they stay for an extra year through 2016 it's unlikely they get revenues from parking, concessions etc. as they do now. That's not likely for cheapo Wang to accept and Botta is just wishfull thinking.

A decision on any arena deal would need to be reached by this Summer optimally to not string along fans in limbo any more and worst case by next summer as the drop dead date. He should've contacted Queens or Brooklyn already.
