Baby steps.
Did Malkin take a "baby step" when he hired Lou?
Always aim for the sky...In every moment.

You wouldn’t be happy w a 5th seed next year. The cup aspirations come in the seasons following.
I am well aware that all the Cup winners basically since forever had a core that needed at least a few years to grow into their eventual Cup champion.
All I'm asking for is that everything and anything you can do to make your franchise as "first-class" as possible you do as soon as possible. You can install a Cup-level front office in almost no time. That's all I've been asking for. Then a team needs to grow together.
Think about where we'd be if Malkin removed snow on day 1 of his ownership two years ago? I'd bet we wouldn't be missing the playoffs two years later.
Dippin Dots!!!
A below average GM would certainly do that because it would have been an idiotic move.Yes, and a "below or average" GM at last years draft, would have told JT sign the contract or you're being shopped for assets we can control.

Certainly not defending Snow but each year 15 teams miss the playoffs. And the vast majority (except for a couple in full blown rebuilding mode) expected to make the playoffs. And many have competent ownership, competent GM's and competent coaches.
Building success is more than just "firing" people. Remember when firing Capuano was considered "the best move the Islanders have made in a long time?" Haven't made the playoffs since.
The point is that people are are enamored by knee-jerk, quick fixes. "So-and-so sucks! Trade him! It'd be addition by subtraction!" "An HF poster can be a better GM! " "The worst coach in pro sports! Fire him and ANYONE will be an upgrade!" How many times have you heard those comments? Rarely works out that way.Well to be fair they have had one full season without him and this was with a rookie head coach. Yes, they have not made the playoffs since his departure in 2017.
We didn’t make the playoffs in ‘17 because of Capuano. And then instead of conducting a real coaching search, Snow promoted his buddy who was just as bad. This team was going nowhere with Cappy, and he clearly wore out his stay with the way the team played before he was fired.Certainly not defending Snow but each year 15 teams miss the playoffs. Well they made the playoffs the year before that and the year before that. The team certainly struggled his last year and justifiably he was fired. Although they were starting to turn things around about a week or two before Weight took over. Probably because they were all but out of it and the games were essentially meaningless. We didn’t make the playoffs in ‘17 because of Capuano.
