Rumor: "Islanders exploring the market on Mat Barzal..."

They tried to make the playoffs this year but now want to trade one of their best forwards? and for what? they struggle to score goals. Makes no sense.
Cause they weren't all that close to making the playoffs and sorokin was putting up absurdly high and unsustainable gsax. They're closer to last place than playoffs when discounting luck-based things. Their prospect pool is mid-low range.

They need to retool at the very least because they also have one of the oldest rosters.

May I introduce you a package of Peterka, Durzi and 1st rounder

Obviously Durzi is not top pairing, but he's good in 2nd pairing and still sub-30
Isles pass. You guys have a total of 3 forward of interest and none of them are getting moved. Peterka isn’t one of them.

Any package from Utah is starting with Iginla or Desnoyers.

Barzal is a great player, a guy that is a premier puck carrier, responsible defensively, and opens up so much ice for his teammates. Losing Barzal would be a tremendous loss for the isles. It would hurt a lot more than the Dobson trade.

Hanging said that I think it’s the right move for both the isles and Barzal to move on.

What is a realistic offer from Winnipeg. #8 + what.

Everyone wants, but what do the Islanders want in return? It's going to be huge and it's going to hurt.
Same thing as I told the one guy from LA:
-Top pairing RHD who can play with Schaefer in his age bracket (26 or under)
-forward under 28 who can consistently score

Basically a mediocre roster player, 1st and B tier prospect won’t cut it.

Yeah, understandable. Maybe Isles and Utah are not good trade partners, especially in blockbuster deals
Honestly, the only roster players of interest are Cooley, Keller and Guenther but none of them are being moved for obvious reason. Peterka is just another middle roster complimentary piece that doesn’t do anything from the Isles and Durzi isn’t enough of an upgrade for the blueline. Barzal return package will just hurt for whatever team acquires him since it’ll fill in multiple spot that the Isles are looking to upgrade.

Barzal isn't an ideal center or wing, but he's more C than W.

- He's bad on faceoffs
- He's elite on breakouts helping the D
- We all know about zone entries especially at ES
- He's very good in neutral zone coverage, and off-board defensive zone coverage
- He can get pushed around in his own zone, but he's otherwise fine

tldr - he's an offensive center who is bad on faceoffs

His best fit is with a winger linemate who will take draws, especially on his weak side. That sort of thing is a little limiting, but also fairly common.

Why would Garrioch have good information on this?

Stramel/Yurov
Spurgeon
Two 1st

Spurgeon is old but he’d be a good mentor to Schafer for another year. He’s an expiring contract after the season so he could be flipped at the tdl too.

Prospect - yes
Pick - yes
Spurgeon - absolutely not

I didn’t say it made sense or would happen. I said on the isles board yesterday that trading Barzal it’s not even in the top five moves the islanders should be thinking about. But just for conversation sake, he’s not untouchable. Some people are making it seem like he’s untouchable and he’s not.

Problem is that people are convinced a middling package compared to what the Isles sent for Horvat is enough for Barzal based on these offers. Return has to be an upgrade to the roster, not just random pieces for the sake of moving the player. To move Mat out to get an equivalent of Beau/Raty/1st is absolutely abysmal asset management and should get Darche on the hot seat.

LA is intriguing. The have a lot of money tied up in Panarin, Fiala, and Kempe. Do you add a Barzal to that mix? What do you pay? The cost has to be a roster player, prospect and pick.

Yup. Barzal is signed so no risk on the part of the receiving team.

Based on these terrible offers I’ve seen, still won’t make a difference. Barzal getting traded for a weaker package than Horvat or Nelson just isn’t happening. Isles have no interest in cap dumps coming back in return just to help another team out.
