What do the Islanders need?
Someone to take on the Engvall, Duclair and Palat deals without retention but besides that:

-A top pairing defensive partner for Schaefer who’s in the same age range as him (18-25)

-high scoring winger 28 and under

-high end prospects in addition to those listed above.

This has Montreal written all over it.

The reason they give for the trade makes it sound like a bullshit story though. Trade away your best forward at 9m AAV for cap space?

...I hope not...Habs need another Top 6 Centre and that isn't Barzal; he's a Top 6 Winger...the amount of assets it would cost are better spent on that Top 6 C, or at least a Top Pairing RD to play with Hutson...

I just really don't understand why the Isles would move their best forward who is still relatively young, at a point where their team is configured to try to make noise right now. Especially while you've got Schaefer wildly outproducing his dirt cheap ELC as a huge point of leverage in the market and team building.

Kinda calling bullshit on this being credible. Especially given the source.

I’d only part with Barzal if NYI gets an equal player in return or young NHL’ers who are ready to make an impact. The last scenario I can accept is to clear salary to bring in a true top liner.

Does the Wild make sense? I don’t know where they’re at asset wise but they absolutely need a center.

I know Kaprizovs deal is huge, on in the flip side their others stars signed dirt cheap contract that largely balances it out, I just don’t know what else they have to give back.

Seems like Mat Barzal could be had for the right price, but what is the right price...?

"A league executive told The Citizen that the New York Islanders are exploring the market for forward Mathew Barzal. The club would like to clear some cap space, but it’s a big financial commitment with four years left at $9.15 million through 2030-31.

Reports indicate the Utah Mammoth kicked tires on Barzal last summer, but opted not to make the move. Barzal, 29, finished with 19 goals and 72 points in 81 games with the Isles last season, but that salary would be tough for the Senators to swallow."

Montreal might have some interest but it be slight

Good player if you're looking for a playmaking winger , anybody thinking they're getting a center is sadly mistaken .

To be fair, they need that too. Just far less so. Pushing Newhook to the third line would be great for the Habs. That being said, I don't know if they want to commit 9M to a winger who only moonlights as a center.

are the Islanders looking for a hockey trade or a time to move on type of trade, where Islanders get back younger assets type of trade?
It’s a throw darts at the board type of rumor since a GM is doing his job of listening to offers on his players no matter who it is. There’s no actual validity to this. To top it off, no we don’t want that $11m boat anchor EP40 contract.

No way the Islanders would entertain trading him within the Metro.

If the Islanders were even considering trading him, I would think the return would be similar in structure to the Dobson deal but with slightly higher value.

Doesn't make sense though to move him given the Islanders weren't far from the playoffs. Only reason would be if they had another move lined up for a bonafide 1st liner and wanted cap space.

I love Barzal but what makes him untradable? Also, how can you say that without even knowing the return?
They tried to make the playoffs this year but now want to trade one of their best forwards? and for what? they struggle to score goals. Makes no sense.

May I introduce you a package of Peterka, Durzi and 1st rounder

Obviously Durzi is not top pairing, but he's good in 2nd pairing and still sub-30
