Post-Game Talk: Islanders 3 - Jets 2

Yeah, I realize there's a "code". (I played in the late 1960s and early 1970s and several times saw both ends of the "code". I have since become a "pacifist".) However, by taking himself out of the game for the last five minutes of the period, did Lowry really help the team? I guess they played better in the second and third, but it still resulted in a loss, the only game stat that really counts. Lowry also takes a lot of important faceoffs (52.0%FOW) and although a lot of folks discount the importance of FOWs, I think they are important. (Would the league keep those stats if they weren't?)
Anyway, since I'm on the topic of FOW, here are the current stats for the Jets' Cs:
Scheifele 48.4%
Namestnikov 45.1%
Lowry 52.0%
Kupari 52.6%
Gustafson 48.7%
As a team, the Jets are 21st in the league at 49.3%.
Wouldn't it be great to have one of our no. 1 and 2 Cs with a FOW >50%?
Face-offS really don't impact the game game much

But A faceoff can completely change it

At the end of the day, a guy who wins 51/100 vs a guy who wins 49/100 isn't a statistically significant improvement

Think he's injured. Seems to have lost a step over the course of the season.
Definitely a possibility, if so I wish they would sit the man for a bit to heal up because we will need Nino at his best if we wish to go on a deep run.

What stood out to me is 2 defensive plays Nelson made to break up grade A scoring chances by our top 2 centers, one on the hard Namestnikov drive to the net, and the other on Vilardi's sauce pass to Scheif. That's a complete center effort.

Namestnikov isn't playing badly by any means, he's not playing with finishers either. Ehlers isn't finishing 5 on 5. And Perfetti is still not finishing his chances. So it's equal opportunity with that line.
Nelson looked great, would obviously love him as our 2C, hate the fact that he would only be a rental though, so sick of it but if it helps us win a cup who cares.

As for Ehlers, I mean simply put the guy is outproducing both Fetts and Vlad at 5on5, has twice as many goals scored as Vladdy with basically the same shooting percentage, same with Fetts though he is only shooting at half their percentage and sure you can look at xG etc and say yeah Vlad ain't bad but the eye test just never passes for me as a top 6 player and doubt it ever will.

I think Ehlers and Nelson could really thrive together.

Was going to post something the same, guy is not the same player he was before the stupid 4 nations tourney! Torts took his confidence

And Ehlers, Vlad and Perfetan only looking and playing like top 6 players for 25% of the season doesn’t cut it and is a huge problem!
I am not sure if it is the tighter play closer to playoff hockey or the benching at 4 Nations or a combo of both but he is definitely not the same. I hope he snaps out of it.

I do agree the second line is very inconsistent but it is the agree old question: Does Ehlers need to play with better players because he does not make those around hi better ala Evander Kane?

He's got a bit of that Kane one-man-show thing going on, but he typically makes the players around him more offensively dangerous.

The Jets need a middle 6 fwd with some finish and poses as a legit shooting threat. Perfetti and Names are not good finishers. Appelton and this year's Nino are trending towards below average or worse.

Couldn't agree more. Where's Phil Kessel?

Names is a 4th line center. I like Ehlers with Lowery and Nino. If that's what we have as a 2nd line. Curious to see if Perfetti can manage the playoffs.

there's usually a good amount of middle 6 Fwds available. Donato, Palmieri, Mccann (although having an average finishing year) would be good additions in my view. Rakell would be a bit of a higher end one, and then Brock Nelson at C.

Stupid four nations?best hockey in awhile. So torts ripped out Connors heart, why wouldn't Connors come back and want to prove torts wrong and play through the heavy play, instead of folding, look at some past playoff grinds and it's the bare down and win attitude that goes to the end, also with a touch of luck.

I am concerned that Connor does not have that killer instinct to bare down for playoff hockey against a 'gritty' or heavy team like Dal, Vegas, the kings or as evidenced by his games vs Phi and NYI.
He is a luxury piece. Great goal scorer and a bit better defensively this year but needs to prove he can lay through the muck.

You should listen to the Oiler's postgame podcast about last night's loss. There are many fans jumping off the Oil well.
