Friedman: Islanders “testing the market” on Dobson

I don't understand why there's rumors of Dobson being on the market.

Afaic, when you have that kind of a defenseman, even more so a righty, you keep him...

I think some people are over reacting to how much he is asking for. It's negotiations of coarse you will ask for more than you actually hope/expect to get

At the end of the day he probably signs for 9-9.5M
Maybe. Is he asking for $11M so that he can sign for $9-$9.5M? Or is he asking for $11M because in 2 years it'll be the equivalent of $9-$9.5M?

I mean Chychrun just extended for $9M ... you'd think Dobson would be in the next tier up

What about just dobson?
It’s fine value-wise but doesn’t seem to be much of a consideration of our needs. We’ll have Pelech, Romanov, and probably Schaefer on LD, adding Byram isn’t a good use of assets. #9 is fine but part of the appeal of dangling Dobson is to get Hagens, who likely won’t be available at that point. And if we can’t get that done the best trade option might be to get scoring help up front (Robertson has been mentioned in this respect).

Fair enough

I have to agree. Hanifin/Hronek were extended for like $7.3 mill a year earlier. Now, that number appears closer to around $9 mill.
Question is whether Dobson will be worth $10-11 mill per season? What benefits Dobson is that he has Pullock ahead of him on the right side to handle tough Defensive matchups.
It's a new GM, so no ties to anyone. Nothing wrong with seeing what the market is for any of his RHD, be it Pullock, Mayfield, Dobson. If the new NYI gm was shopping for futures, he'd get a boatload of offers.

But, don't think he's looking for that.

7th overall + McAvoy for Dobson.

Isles draft Hagens.

A double homecoming.
This is an obvious troll, but if NYI's ultimate goal in this draft was to go home with Hagens and McAvoy, what would it actually cost? Here's my guess;

7th OA, 61st OA, McAvoy
For
1st OA, 42nd OA, Dobson (sign and trade)

Bruins would be getting worse on the backend here initially - Dobson isn't as good as Chuckie and Dobson will likely cost slightly more AAV based on this being a 2025 contract signing, and not a 2021 signing. To offset this value indifference, the Bruins upgrade 1st and 2nd round picks. This also assumes Hagens is around at 7 for NYI, and that's far from a given. Would NYI be just as happy to walk away from the draft with Desnoyers or Martin for example? Not sure about that.

TBH, I believe both teams say no to this proposal, just doesn't seem realistic. I think it's decently close value wise, however.

It was weird last year. It's like he massively regressed.

He definitely wasn't great. That being said, best defensive metrics on the team, still managed to put in 40 points on a team with no offense and plays a position most teams are looking for. Understand gauging his value but you won't find a RD with his current stats that's RFA or UFA without ponying up 10+ in the next couple of years.

If they could get the term under 8 years I'd give him 9.5 easy.
