Friedman: Islanders “testing the market” on Dobson

Ok, but many Isles fans have been coveting Pinto for a long time, I would love JG to come back home and Ottawa's top summer priority is a RD, so tbf there is an obvious fit in some ways
Our priority isn't for an offensive D-man though. Dobson is great, don't get me wrong, but it's not what Ottawa needs. It would be Chychrun 2.0, but worse because he'd be on an 7-8 year deal at premium price.

I still think Dobson for 2nd OA makes a ton of sense for both sides, but I know Sharks fans would just prefer the pick.

Neutral fan here, and I believe 2OA has quite a bit more value than Dobson in a vacuum.

Moreso considering that the team acquiring Dobson would need to pay him $9-11M a season.

And that gets even more compounded by the fact that Dobson can just take his qualifying offer for a year and then ride it to UFA next season (I think he would have 7 years in the NHL by then and thus be UFA at 26).

So yeah, 5th overall or so straight-up I could see happening but any pick higher than that would require the Islanders to add to Dobson on their side in my opinion.

Depending on what Dobson says to any team acquiring him, I could even see a world in which his trade value ends up quite a bit lesser than many Islanders fans would like.

Faber and Sanderson are a lot better Dmen than Dobson .
But, they've already signed preannouncement of the jump in the cap. Now, agents and players are using who signed after the cap of $95, $104, $113 mill were announced as baseline comps moving forward.

And Chrychrun is now at $9 mill. Plus the difference in the number of RFA/UFA years as well.

That's terribly risky for Dobson, and IF it were to pay off for him, he'd get paid even more. Given the very low frequency by which this happens, I think it's pretty unlikely.

Dobson would be taking a risk, yeah, but he'd also be able to dictate where he wants to play.

He could sign a cheaper deal than $10-11M with a no-tax state team, get the majority of his pay as a signing bonus so that it'd be even more tax-efficient.

If Dobson was confident in himself and willing to gamble a little bit, he'd be able to both determine where he wants to play exactly AND get more money after another big boost to the salary cap next year.

Scoring is not the primary role for a good "defense"man tbf
OK, but scoring is absolutely a primary measure of whether a player is elite offensively (which is what I was talking about incase it wasn’t clear).

Dobson is coming off a disappointing season and returning to the same HC Roy.
If you are someone who is likely to command a big payday, you don't just play it out and hit UFA.

Reinhart, Tkachuck, PLD, Trouba, Fiala were all traded away as RFA.

For the Isles, I get that they don't want their version of Nurse who got $9.25 mill per and hasn't lived up to the deal.
