Is there any chance the Rangers can trade for a true #1?

Given the cap crunch and loss of depth from trading a package of players, it has to be Nash and only Nash going the other way for that 1st line center. A 1b like Stepan is the most realistic option. Sweeten the pot a bit from the Rangers side(even if its Miller) and I think you could get it done.

Maybe Columbus will take back Nash for Johansen... :sarcasm:

my dream is for the Rangers to somehow obtain a top flight center with size (aka Getzlaf, E. Staal, Thornton/Lecavalier when they were a bit younger). Just seems like it will never come to fruition.

I do think a trade will be coming soon -- but for a lesser proven center or "Sather reclamation project" which can either be a huge hit or miss. They can't possibly go into this season with the same group of centers MINUS Richards & Boyle and just pray that J.T Miller can be anything extraordinary.

.....
Kreider E.Staal St. Louis
Haggerty Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Stepan Kristo
Glass Moore Lindberg

McDonagh Girardi
Staal Murphy
Moore Boyle

Lundqvist
Talbot

Believe it or not, with that lineup, we'd be more than 3.5 million UNDER the cap....

we are 3.5 million under the cap because we have Haggerty and Kristo on the 2nd and 3rd lines. I'm hopeful for those guys, but to put them in those positions at this point is not going to be a wise move for being successful. or their development, IMHO.

SeventySeven and Bernmeister...kindred spirits.

I think unless Sathers can pull off a steal for Jumbo Joe, then we're going into he season with Step-Brass-Miller-Moore. That's okay. We have very good wing depth, better than most of the league actually. If we can land one more winger, to play on the 2nd or 3rd line we would compensate for our C depth. Think, Nash-MSL-Kreider-Zuccarello-Hagelin as current top 9 wingers, add the final top 9 W via trade or FA and our wing depth is top in the league almost. Then Glass and Fast/Lindberg/Carcillo or whoever flanking Dom Moore we have the potential to be a very deep team offensively.

Also important is Brass taking a big step forward as the number 2 C.

Stepan had 15 points in 24 playoffs games--one of which he only played a couple minutes because he was knocked out of it by a cheap shot. Played 8 games then with a broken jaw and pretty much all situations. 15 points tied him for second in scoring with St. Louis. McDonagh had 17. If Nash could have finished some of his shots Stepan would have had more. Stepan had a very good playoffs. At least a B+.

He played the remaining games at a lighter weight because he couldn't eat. Have to imagine his energy levels being low. Great showing for him in the playoffs.

Looking at the situation realistically, I think you see a move for a center at the deadline because of salary cap reasons. I'm still thinking it will be J. Thornton. I don't see the Rangers spending $3MM on a center they're not crazy about, like Legwand for example, who they could have had.

The only thing that gives me pause about that idea is that you'll need a playmaker for MSL, Nash and Zucc. If Nash move to LW, I think you take a hit offensively with your bottom 2 lines looking like Hags, Miller, Fast and Glass, Moore, ???.

Not at all, except as to the fraternity we all share here at the boards.

77 want to deal Stepan for the 'upgrade' of ROR.
I want to deal Staal for ROR and flip ROR + Stepan for someone who is, or who shortly can be that kick ass dominant C we need, a Getzlaf of tomorrow who is useful this season.

Big dif.

I would kike to be more in concurrence with the rest of your post. and will give it another read. But first glance, it does not do the hard choices we need to couple of steps back to go more forward after.

There is too much 'tude here that we just made the finals, we only need a guy here, a guy there.

If it wasn't for Divine Intervention making us feel like the '69 Mets, we'd have been crushed way earlier.

Gotta do a lot more substantial changes if you're gonna get like the Yankees of yore, and dominate!

Thornton = too old for speed game, too much $ even with cap, given that term.

Reinvent the wheel

MORE HORSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:laugh::yo::handclap::D:naughty:

So let me get this straight, you want to solidify our center depth by having a 1-2 combo of ROR and Step AND then trade it away....legit. :shakehead

If anything, then anything. Those types of statements are meaningless. The fact is that this team did make the finals, and could have won with some small tweaks.

If they decimate the D to get RyJo, that D isn't going to be repaired before Hank is gone or significantly wakened. Now is the time to strike IMO. Not to trade the future for now, but to not blow up no for the future. Build steady. That's how you win.

You lost me at "...and flip ROR + Stepan..."
If by some miracle COL and NYR make a trade of Staal for ROR or a trade centering around those 2 players... you keep ROR and Stepan. You don't flip those two for one player. Those are your 1st & 2nd line centers.

Finally people are starting to realize Step is a 2nd line center at best at this level. Id be ok with trading him for a solid center but only for someone younger the E Staal

I'm waiting for people to realize he's a 1C already at this level.

Also Bern, you're more out to lunch than you usually are here.

If he's a second line center, there are only a handful of first line centers in the league, in which case, we're not really talking about "first line centers" anymore, we're talking about elite centers. Step isn't one of those, no, but he's very clearly a first line center.

If that's the case, there's 5 1st line centers in the league.

Steps isn't elite. He's a 60 point center with great two-way play at AGE 24.

Ok i guess you're right. But id like for the rangers to have at least a top 15 center. (better then half) Steps not even top 30. E. Staal is top 15 IMO

Who's saying that?

Saying someone is a first line center means something specific. Stepan is a first line center. He was just playing 1C on a team that made the finals for god's sake.

If you're measuring it by ice-time, he was still second behind Richards. .

Which, in itself, is an illogical way to measure it, (even so, Stepan got more ice-time than Richards in the playoffs anyway).
