It's definitely become more offensively focused since the 90s

In the earliest years, it almost felt like the trophy was for players not necessarily on the top line, who happen to be elite checkers.... almost like an unsung hero award.

There's an issue about it being based on two-way ability rather than pure defensive ability but I prefer that anyways.

It’s a little bit strange that the NHL gives out a significant award for best defensive forward. But the Norris is essentially for best offensive defenseman and there’s nothing for best defensive defenseman.

Sharks were -55 when Karlsson wasn't on the ice.

Karlsson was also +/- 0 at 5on5 playing behind by far the leagues worst goaltending with a -44 GSAA. His bad +/- was solely due to 25 empty net goals against.

He also put up 101 points playing with bad players, finishing 2nd in the league in 5on5 points with 65, which was also ahead of McDavid.

The Sharks would had a historically terrible season if they didn't have Karlsson, who was clearly the leagues best defenseman that season.
Don't try to convince people. Just tell him what he wants to hear and move on. Yes, Mitch Marner is a defensive beast and secret playoff performer. Good thinking Cabbage 🥬

All voting is mostly a gong show. Thats why you stick to statistical totals. Most goals, points, etc. What stat do you even use for two way forward? Plus minus is too sketchy. Some sort of advanced statistic you can use? There is too much bias in voting.
