It should be voted on by GMs, coaches, scouts, etc, not know-nothing media.
Thomas Vanek once got a Selke vote by a Buffalo media person because he was +40, though defense isn't part of his game at all.
Barkov, Bergeron, etc, exemplify the Selke, as they are great at shutting down the opponents' best players. Great penalty killers too.
Matthews coming in 3rd is a joke. Great player. Yes, he's fine defensively. Has he ever been put on the ice to shut down the opponents' best scorers? No. The opposition puts their defenders on the ice to shut him down. So, he usually is against the other team's 3rd line, and defensive defensemen, not their best scoring threat. I don't know if he killed penalties this season, but pre-2023-24, he had been on the PK 24 minutes total in his career.
