Is the Golden Knights' problem Jack Eichel?

I'm highly impressed that they can make such a scrub goalie like JAG Thompson look above league average. He reeks of Grubauer on Colorado or even Carter Hutton or Brian Elliott on St. Louis.

I'm looking forward to seeing what team that ''Needs reliable goaltending'' trades for him or signs him in UFA when Vegas is smart enough to know they shouldn't blow a whole lot of cash and term on his next deal.

And then the ensuing ''Wait! Why does he suck here? I thought he was so good? He had an above league average save percentage in Vegas? What gives?!''.

His GSAx was close to a -3 coming into today, but may be better after this one. However, his GSAA is considerably higher than that.

even if you look at his underlying numbers during the last 12 games, they are not good. Maybe 1 strong game from an underlying standpoint

Drastic from his first 12 games of the season where had 1 bad game during the first 12 games.

Eichel is one of those players that's very good, if not great, but just not in the upper echelon.

He's more of a Taylor Hall to me.

He was touted in the months or year before the 2015 draft as being a closer second to McDavid than you would think, and he's not even the second or third best player in that draft. Not even sure if he's top-5, but I'd really have to go through the names in that draft to say for sure.

Marner and Ratanen definitely go ahead of him.

Vegas has to clean house. My god. GM has to go.
I don't know if they need to, but if they're a one and done this year? I think they just might blast McCrimmon and/or McPhee.

I wouldn't have been surprised to see them do it last year with how aggressive and proactive they've been and it being a non-playoff making year.

And the sad thing is that I don't even think they're a playoff lock.

The battle for the Pacific Division is sure to be a turtle derby from here on out.

that’s kind of a lot to ask with his 10 mil cap hit. if you’re making that type of money, you kind of have to be the guy. otherwise, what’s the point of acquiring that type of player? it wouldn’t make sense

No doubt that when you get paid that much you gotta put up numbers to match. But without the context of his paycheck, I still feel like he would be benefit from not having to be the leader in the lockeroom. And not being the main offensive guy, but the number 2 or even number 3.

Isn't that his current situation?

Imo he's expected to be the main offensive guy on VGK. You can argue that the vets on the team are enough. But I'm kinda thinking a Vet core like what the Bruins have, would mentor him pretty well. Kinda like with Hall

yeah, no disagreement about the role he would be best suited for. i just wanted to highlight the conundrum. the contract carries responsibilities along with it.

imo jack is a tremendous player. i can’t speak to his off ice habits because frankly i have no idea, but during his time in buffalo he would take a lot of shifts off. if i had to armchair it i would say he’s just a rich kid with adhd. always could float by due to his elite talent, but prolly spoiled at home and never had to really put in the effort required by professional sports. it’s actually kind of a tragic figure sort of thing when you really think about it

Kaprizov would go before him too

Between the injuries and the fact that he never got proper development, a lot of his potential has gone unrealized.

When he’s engaged he’s just so darn good, and can take over a game. Why he goes through long stretches where he is invisible and looks disinterested is beyond me.

Development is a two-way street. Can't draw new or missing things out of someone who isn't interested in putting in that work.
Agreed. He bears some of the blame for that. But he certainly wasn't put in a position to succeed with the train wreck of coaches and GMs he dealt with in his first six years. It still boggles my mind that we managed to follow up Tim Murray with an even worse GM, and Bylsma with two increasingly worse head coaches.
