Is the draft lottery working?

It's obviously stupid and not working. There should be no opportunity for foul play. The way it is now, how do we know strings are not being pulled? It's a joke.

You do realize teams were actively benching and trading players every time they did well. The whole point of the lottery is there was foul play

I don't mind the system and being an Oilers fan I've gotta suggest they should have made the Edmonton Oilers rule which bars any team from drafting 1st overall twice in 3 years and top 3 5 times within 10 years. If you are last in the league the best you should be able to get is 2nd overall if you've already gotten 1st overall within the last 2 drafts.

In regard to your first part, fans cheering for wins or hoping for losses has no bearing on the outcome. So go ahead and cheer for the win. It has no affect on the outcome.

Secondly, I grew up with no lottery and had no problem with how things worked.
I really have no issue with tanking so long as teams aren't purposely throwing games. I'm not talking about spinning off assets for future assets. I'm talking about actively conspiring to lose.

It’s working fine. The odds take care of everything. It just rubs people the wrong way when things don’t go the way they hope.

There are many examples of real tanking. Here are two of them.

There is no question the Penguins tanked to get Lemieux

Did the Pens tank the '83-'84 season to get Lemieux?

The Art of Tanking: The Pittsburgh Penguins in 1983-84

The Sabres clearly tanked for McDavid

The Buffalo Sabres Are Truly Terrible On Purpose But Sadly It Might Not Matter

Lets be honest. Ok? That is two examples of something people make it sound like happens with regularity rather than twice in 35 years.

At the same time there are people that think any playoff missing team selling off pending free agents at the trade deadline is tanking.

There are more than two. The poster asked for an example and a link. I responded with two. Selling off UFA's isn't tanking. Read the linked articles.

My original point is the NHL shouldn't reward inept management or allow playoff bubble teams to move up 10-12 spots.

Teams should be limited in 1st overall picks and top 3 picks over a 3-5 year period and the lottery should probably be limited to the worst 5-6 teams.

I like the true lottery style. Should the percentage chance of winning be amended? Maybe...but I think it’s been aright overal.

It’s not like dropping from 1 to 4 gives you a terrible player, it simply forces you to have to pick the right guy.

The reality is, nobody will ever be pleased with the lottery process, and nobody will ever truly trust it. I’m still angry the league pretends they didn’t give Crosby to Pittsburgh. Lol

Reward inept management? So your prescription is to make it harder for them?

Yes, it's working. It deters tanking. Any team that misses the playoffs can win it but you aren't guaranteed a top 2 pick just because you finished last.

If you draft well...you can get good players anywhere in the draft. Islanders got Barzal, Boston got McAvoy and Pastrnak, Detroit got Larkin...all great players, all after the top 10 picks in the draft.
I am very happy the Bruins didn’t get Barzal/Chabot/Connor that year. That would have been insane.

You and I both grew up without a lottery. But we also grew up without a salary cap. The two are certainly linked.

If you like the true lottery style, then how would you feel about allowing all 32 teams to participate in the lottery? True lottery style would also be more like the lottery determining the order for the entire draft. The team with the 1st overall could have it in every round, the 32nd overall after Seattle joins would be 32 in each round.

Personally I'm against this idea.

No if the lottery was only for the top 3 positions, teams that had already won the lottery would pick 4th. They would still get a hell of a player, it keeps them from getting multiple generational players. What I'm against is the idea that a single team could get McDavid, Matthews and Hughes or Dahlin.

To give the worst teams the maximum amount of help, the worst team (or the winner of the lottery) should be able to pick the first 7 players. Then the next team gets the next 7 players, etc. Cup winners get players #218-224.

Would be fun to watch an age group of stars develop together in the same team. Like in 2016 the Leafs would have gotten Matthews, Laine, Tkachuk, Dubois and Keller (plus a couple of Finnish busts).

I wouldn’t want playoff teams included in the draft lottery.

I like where we’re at right now. I like that just because Ottawa is really bad (assuming they didn’t trade the pick) it doesn’t guarantee that a specific player will be going there.

If I’m a prospect, I love the lottery as it is now. The thought of being McDavid, or Matthews, or Dahlin etc. and not having to be stuck on the worst team in the league. Going to the team that had a few injuries but just missed the playoffs would be a dream come true!

1. Top 3 picks year to year don't carry the same value. The year Ovechkin and Malkin were picked anyone remember the consensus 3rd pick who was a bust?

2. The Capitals were penalized for winning the Ovechkin lottery with the 16 pick in the next draft while the Penguins got to pick 2nd and then 1st. That was not remotely fair. Be careful how your attempts to manage what is right doesn't turn out of be terribly unfair.

Edit - by the way I'm familiar with the 3rd pick in that draft. After Ovie and Malkin that was one of the worst drafts in modern memory.

That was a true lottery and part of why I am against them and want to keep from having huge swings like that, or the Blackhawks moving up 12 slots this year or the Flyers moving up 11 slots in the Hischier/Patrick draft when they both didn't miss the playoffs by much.

IMO, if there had been a season in 2005 and the Caps finished with the worst record after winning the Ovie pick, they would have picked no worse than 4th, and could have picked 2nd or 3rd.

So as a Leafs fan, you would have been fine if after having the worst record in the league in the Matthews lottery the first overall pick would have gone to Boston? Boston barely missed the playoffs that year.

At no point did I say I’d like it if my team got screwed. Lol

The old days didn’t work. I like the current system. But the current system was also in place when we got Matthews, so there’s no difference, is there?

Sabres tank is a myth they didn't purposely play the worst lineups possible and the coach got the most out of the players they had most of their big trades were done the season before and they actually had an improved point total from the season before I love how people ignore this.

The players never tank. The coaches rarely tank.

The front office just trades anyone who plays well. Ask Enroth. That's how teams tank.
