Since we don't any otha sucka who takes faceoffs, is Tavares, John an automatic choice for the PK unit? It's key to win faceoffs so therefore Tavares would have to be on one of the pk units no? Teams lose games because of they fools on tha draws. If a sucka can't win one, they lose and be dumb.

It could be something like: Tavares - Hyman and Kapanen - Lindholm
What's y'all thank because we have to win that draw real hard.

no, I'd rather our 11 million dollar man isn't out there blocking shooting lines
But whom take that draw man? A team always has that one sucka who did that. Other than that they will lose-a-lot records if a sucka can't take that draw. Tavares played pk for the isles real hard. We might have to put him in his place.

Tavares was taking PK minutes for the NYI the last two seasons.

2016-17
Tavares PK TOI 0:57, NYI ranked 11th

2017-18
Tavares PK TOI 1:34, NYI ranked 31st

Not saying he's bad on the PK but I'd rather have Hyman, Brown, Kap out there on the PK. Don't see why he couldn't fill in from time to time though.

Babs usually picks 4 forwards and splits them into pairs.

Last season: Hyman, Brown, Komorov, Moore/Plekanec
This season: Hyman, Brown, Kapanen, 4th C

He's unlikely to put a star forward out there. Not even Kadri.

It's certainly useful to have PK ability as part of another player's skillset, but I don't imagine he'll regularly be one of the four forwards given a fully healthy group. Think he'll be utilized there similar to how Marleau was last season.

An important consideration when deciding who wins the 4C role is whether he's good at PK.

I'd go

4C/Brown
then Hyman/Kapanen or Johnsson

But no Tavares on the PK unless it's late game situation and game is either tied or we're up 1.

Half our wingers are actually centers.

Our pkers:

Hyman Brown
Lindholm Jooris
Johnsson Kapanen

I'd love to see Tavares-Matthews and Kadri-Kapanen/Hyman tried out as pairs to see if playing high skilled players is actually the best strategy

Komarov will be missed on the PK

Hyman - Brown
Hainsey - Zaitsev

Kadri/Johnsson - Kapanen
Rielly - 6th D

I like the idea to put some pressure on the other team but I doubt we'll see it. I wouldn't mind seeing it a little more often because when they get into penalty trouble most of our "stars" end up sitting 4+ mins. Interested to see who is on the PK this year. As much as they needed to move on from Komarov and Polak they were pretty effective on the PK.

I'd prefer they not waste hyman on the pk... He has the hardest job on the team and is the most overworked. Imagine him fully rested during the pk and completely fresh to hunt down pucks offensively.

Since we don't any otha sucka who takes faceoffs, is Tavares, John an automatic choice for the PK unit?

No. 79% of the Leafs PK faceoffs were taken by wingers last year. Even when the Leafs had a C on the ice it didn't matter (In Plek's 17 games with the Leafs he took 17 PK faceoffs - about half as many as Hyman during those games). The Leafs put out a lefty and a righty and whoever was on their strong side took the faceoff.

I have heard the rebuttal that the Leafs should change that system and go with Cs usually taking faceoffs on the PK because on the PK last year the Leafs only won 48.44% of their draws. But that percentage was good enough for 8th in the NHL - and the reality is that faceoffs on the PK really don't count for much. Only two teams were 50% or better on the PK last year: Buffalo and Carolina - both bottom ten teams at the PK. The worst team at PK faceoffs last year? Colorado - less than 38%. 4th best PK in the league. Incidentally the previous year Colorado was second in PK faceoff winning % (at 50.8%) and had the second worst PK in the league. The year before they had MacKinnon and Duchene killing a lot of penalties, the next year they got rid of Duchene and took MacKinnon off the PK because faceoffs are way, way over-rated on the PK. The bottom five teams in 2016-17 at PK faceoffs were all in the top 11 for PK.

It's key to win faceoffs so therefore Tavares would have to be on one of the pk units no? Teams lose games because of they fools on tha draws. If a sucka can't win one, they lose and be dumb.

No. I think that the evidence shows that teams should put out their best penalty killers. They might win 5% fewer draws - so one in 20 - but they probably put more pressure on the other team during those lost draws, don't allow them to set up, cause a turnover and ice the puck.

Hyman, Brown, Kapanen and whoever else is a decent penalty killer as the fourth.

What's y'all thank because we have to win that draw real hard.

Evidence doesn't support this claim.

I might be alone but I want a Mitchy - Kappy unit out there, Marner can take draws and has PK'd in the O, and even a couple shifts in the show I believe. They get the puck, shorties for days. Especially if we take a 5 minute. We could theoretically roll Mitchy - Kappy, Hyman - Brown, Kadri - Johnsson, Lindholm - Jooris as PK units, even Tavares - Patty is an option. Quite frankly, the only ones who are absolute locks to not PK for me is Willy, and probably Matthews (who I think will PK later in his career but not now), Leivo, and Ennis. If there's one issue we don't have it forwards that can PK, now D on the other hand: Zaitsev - Hainsey, Reilly - Dermott?, Ozhiganov? - Borgman? and thats probably in the whole system (Gardiner is Willy on D but scarier, and Carrick while good defensively is too small to PK).

Tavares had the best PK metrics on the islanders last season by a long shot.
