Is Sheldon Keefe The Issue?

I think Keefe is a decent coach but he's gotta stop trying to be buddies with the players. He shouldn't have to walk back comments when he's speaking facts.

Would not hurt to show some balls and bench Matthews and Marner when they're out playing no contact shinny. He has every right to demand more.

He's always out of breath when he speaks now, dude needs to drop some pounds, he sounds laboured all the time.

Remember how quick Shanahan made him do an about face early last season when he tried that? Rest assured, Shanahan will not allow any of that on his two precious prima donnas!

He’s not much of an ass kisser. Doubt the core 4 would react positively, but maybe for a short time.
He’d be a better option for a hard working meat and potatoes roster.

Personally, I wish they'd get a coach with a bit of fire, but not one who prefers to play mind games with his players a la Mike Babcock.

Leafs have to be the only team in the league that gives out blank cheques, doesn't require 8 year deals, and coddles their players like they're China dolls.

They're not rookies anymore ffs, treat them like men

This team has had two coaches. One was an egomaniac who preferred to play mind games with his players, and the second one is the biggest ass kisser I've ever seen behind the bench. Can we try with a middle ground before we conclude the core is unsalvageable?

They need someone with balls who will kick these lazy donkey's asses. The team is already out of a playoffs position after American Thanksgiving. Why wait until they are buried so far they can't get back?

He certainly has fire. I thought he was going to jump over the glass, pull DeBoer’s tongue out and slap him with it in last years playoffs.
While I too would like a similar personality behind the bench I don’t believe we have the character to make it work with our roster.
 
I am probably in the minority here but I think Keefe is a good coach. In the last couple of seasons he has the roster playing strong and structured team defense. I wish he could clean up some of the bench management issues to avoid those too many men penalties, but other than that I think coaching is not the problem with this team. Right now the defense corps is absolutely thin, and our goaltending has been way to inconsistent to start the season.
 
Keefe can’t even teach his players that only 5 of them can play at any given time
 
Evaluating Keefe's performance over the years is tricky, like a questionable goalie (Keefe) getting what bad D gives him (Dubas).

Playoffs is the biggest concern, looking at jackets and habs, but folks have been vocal about having a poorly constructed playoff team since before Keefe entered the picture. He was the wrong coach at the wrong time but he's already here.

Without many options available last off season, maintaining some continuity post scandal with a coach that has admirably proven the ability to reach the playoffs with most of this squad was not a bad play all things considered.

Now it's just another difficult kink to work out as we build out a new vision. He's probably our coach through the season and the playoffs and his fate will rest on the results and who else is available in the offseason.

Hard to say, the last good coach we had more or less just gave up and went home under Dubas but Keefe never had that luxury.

Nevertheless, if that's the case there still wasn't much to be done in the off season or now. We need more thoughtful and timely moves and less shoot from the hip JT style moves going forward in the organization.

Keefe gets another shot as a result of the general disarray that was left. It was so bad Shanny got another shot as well.

I would be fine if they swapped Keefe out mid season, but I don't see it happening and there are valid reasons for that.
 
The more I watch this gong show the more I say no. Shanahan is incompetent and is trying to re hash what never was. We are actually past our window with a team in deep decline and no defense or goaltending. I think the real problem is ownership.

Keefe being stupid is part of the issue.

But his bosses are even moreso. Like all businesses the crap starts at the top. Tanenbaum continues to employ his friends against the best interests of the team.

What's Shanahan most famous for?

It definitely isn't being business savvy. He doesn't strike me as a very smart person. Which is why Sheldon Keefe got an extension this summer.

A loser losing with a team of other losers.

This franchise continues to bury it's head in the sand. Employing Keefe well after his best before date. Which just makes them look even dumber.

The Shanaplan has been a massive failure.

One playoffs series win in nine years. The rebuild's been pissed away. If there is anything left these guys can do to get fired I can't think of it.

At this point you really have to question the basic human intelligence of any owner that would allow this to happen.
 
Yes he is an issue they wont address. He was an issue all the way back to the start and especially the MTL series.

The best posters here IMHO have been going red in the face about this forever. At this point its safe to say all Leafs fans in denial are starring down a train coming at them in a dark tunnel. That light and horn are indeed headed right at you! Get off the tracks please already.

That would be ideal, but who has remained in charge throughout all of this?
