Doesn’t play great D, small and weak in his own zone. Defensive awareness and compete level leaves lot to be decided in his own zone.

Excellent offensive instincts and skating, development with D men is almost never linear. He might a rough few years ahead of him in his own zone.

That’s all Huggy Bear cares about is points. 4th forward/PP specialist. That’s all!
Well, when your playing for a crap defensive team yah that's all he can do. Canucks suck as everyone can see so far but at least he's showing offence he just needs to be average defensively and that will come.

-3 in 7-3 loss. He really didn’t do his job!

Well, when someone posts sarcasm you send it back :thumbu:.

Trade Hughes for Makar or Heiskanen, any of the 3 would fail in the current role he’s expected to play. He’s a 21 year old offensive defenceman whoa expected to play both sides of the ice because Vancouver only has one other good defender

Nate Schmidt was a top 2 defender on Vegas and carried that team.

However, he looks extremely pedestrian in every way on Vancouver.

Vancouver is imploding as a team right now and Hughes is in it with them. He's swimming against a riptide.

Where's the matching thread for Pettersson? The gap between Pettersson last season and this season is similar to the gap between Hughes last season and this season. Miller? Same deal.

Dialing in on Hughes right now is myopic and dumb.

Yes, very overrated. Watch him closely. He's a liability whenever he's on the ice, not a good hockey player.
He's a great hockey player. Offense is an important part of the game.

Unfortunately, he was getting abused by the Leafs skilled guys tonight.

Thats actually a really good theory to dispute. I think Makar and Heiskanen are that good defensively, they would drastically improve the Canucks.

I think if he played with a Brodie/Muzzin type guy who has solid defensive awareness and could handle the puck well enough to get it to him to play his elite offensive game he would be a lot less troubled in his own zone.

To me his ceiling will be a better version of Morgan rielly who is a 15-25 best dmen in the league right now imo.

I think Hughes ends in the 8-15 range and is a yearly fringe top 10 defenseman in the league.

His defense due to frame and size will always be questionable but as he gets older he will get smart and take safer routes.

Offensively he is the 2nd best young defenseman in the game after Makar and no one except Dahlin has a shot of being better than him in the offensive zone

(see him being better offensively than all of byram/dysadale/sanderson/power/lambos/clarke/heiskanen/chabot/mcavoy/werenski/Provorov)

I completely forgot he was traded. Hows he look? That was my theory in other threads that the Canucks system was far inferior to the Knights and he would be exposed.

Vancouver has Hughes and Schmidt and then the defence drops off a cliff. You can even see it in Schmidt’s game, he’s nothing like he was on Vegas
