At that time, when he was a 19/20 year old, I never claimed Matthews was a top-10 player in the NHL.........because that would be ludicrous. But AT LEAST he'd already had a 40 goal season at that point. Pettersson has literally done nothing yet.

Right...

Not now, not borderline, I can't see it next year which makes me answer nope but he is a great talent and has a chance to be top 10 in the future...

Absolutely not. He isn't a top 10 forward either.

In terms of forwards he is behind in no particular order.
Connor Mcdavid
Nathan Mackinnon
Sidney Crosby
Leon Draisaitl
Nikita Kucherov
Artemi Panarin
Alex Ovechkin
Evgeni Malkin
Patrick Kane
Auston Matthews
Jack Eichel
Brad Marchand
David Pastrnak

Just right there that's 13 names, factor in Seth Jones, and Victor Hedman. That's 15 names.

He’s likely in the same range as Bergeron/Barkov/Scheifele/Point/Couts/ROR but idk yet.

Is that just a hologram in the games he's playing then? Because I'm pretty sure he's doing something

You have to be out of your mind if you don't believe he is in the Point/Schiefele range yet. He is better than some of those players. He is on the same tier as Matthews.

He’s on the same tier as Mackinnon and McDavid but not quite as good as them yet

If not next year, the one after for sure. Being in the 10-20 in the league as a sophomore is awesome. He is 175 lbs, he is going to keep getter better as he gets stronger. EP at 25 and 195 pounds will be scary.

For those of you who had any doubt, tonight's game should have given you some insight into just how dominate a player Elias Pettersson can be. If he isn't top 10 already, he'll be there soon.

I think it's way too soon. He's in the top 20 discussion with a lot of other guys but even that's early.

A few things working against him currently:

- No PPG or above seasons
- Not elite defensively (he's got some Datsyuk-like two-way forward potential, but he's not there)
- Doesn't PK
- Doesn't log heavy ES minutes (4th on his own team at ES among forwards)
- Soft (it's not a major issue due to his skill, but still at times he's too weak and needs to get stronger)
- Not really a true center yet

And I'm saying this is a huge EP fan, I think he's the closest thing to Datsyuk(aka my favorite player ever) the league has currently. But even though he's really killing it offensively in these playoffs so far, he still has some work to do if he wants to seperate himself from the pack and establish himself as a top 10 player.
For example, I can't believe a guy like Barkov isn't mentioned more. Just a year ago he had 96 points while being elite defensively. If that guy isn't top 10, EP certainly isn't.

Said it before, but I still don't get how Pettersson went behind Hischier and Patrick. It's not even a Kucherov situation where he blossomed afterward almost out of the blue. Literally a year after they were drafted and he's showing he's a clear step above.

Huh? He is clearly a center.

If you think EP is soft, then I do not know what to tell you.

He needs to gain strength sure, but he is not soft.

I think he just means he gets pushed off the puck and outmuscled too easily still, not that he's soft in the typical derogatory sense where someone avoids contact and traffic even if they can make a play and tends to stay on the perimeter. He's definitely a gamer when it comes to physical battles.

Did someone say he's done nothing?
How about a Calder trophy, 2nd in playoff scoring and near ppg as a young rookie...
Thats something not "literally nothing"

He's prob around top 20 forward in league and on the rise

Seems undersized would be the better word to say than soft.

The kid does have a mean streak.
