is one year of tanking in our best interest long term?

I hate myself for saying this but. After thinking about it I think it's best long term if this team tanks for 1 year to draft Mackinnon. Doing so would give us a core going forward of Mackinnon Kessel JVR Gardiner, Reilley that is a nice core group. Throw solid role players like Kuliemin, Frattin and brown on top of that and the foundation is there for a good team. IF Kessel doesn't want to stay trade him for a big package either at this deadline or the draft but he seems to like it here I think he stays.

The Leafs like I said already have a lot of peices in place what they don't have is a franchise center Mackinnon can be that. It's not as if this team needs to be torn down it just needs to get that 1 peice it build arround the complimentary peices are for the most part and the ones that aren't we have the cap space to acquire in the offseason.

I don't 1 year of tanking doesn't seem so bad when the end result is a team that has a core group of Mackinnon Kessel JVR Gardiner, Reilley and is rapidly on the rise.

I say tank this year sell off steckel, connolly, macarthur Lombardi, bozak maybe even Lupul for once get the franchise player for once. Use the cap room to have to fill in around him one thing we have plenty of this year is cap space.

Would love to watch playoff hockey however, with the tendy tandem we have I don't think we have to worry about anything but a very decent chance at the first overall pick. Not bothered either way.

me to but what I want to watch more is a conter. I think it can be done fairly quickly but we need to tank this year

I would rather have a top 3 pick than squeak into the playoffs and get thumped 4 straight by the Pens or Rangers. Mackinnon will be a franchise #1 center in a few years. The leafs should take whatever steps are necessary to draft him. If that means trading a blue chip prospect plus picks than so be it.

I agree, if we were guaranteed mackinnon I couldn't care less if we went 0-48. That being said its not a guarantee so I'll hope for playoffs and if not, it's to be expected.

A top 5 pick would be awesome for the Leafs....BUT will UFA want to sign with a bottom feeder? Probably not. So there is the trade off. Get a Mackinnon but lose out (potentially) on a Getzlaf and/or Perry.

Star players rarely sign with bottom feeders

Another Top 5 pick would be great. So would another first round pick if an asset could be flpped at the deadline. But I don't think you can require a professional club to "give up". That's a terrible culture to mess around with. Toronto's lack of depth may net gain at the draft again and there may not be a thing the club can do to stop that.

But planning for a tank at the beginning of even a shortened season sends the wrong message to anyone concerned with the club now and in the future.

that is true but how long would we be a bottom feeder? not long IMO if Mackinnon is as good as he is soposed to be. If we can draft him and sign a goalie we'd be on a rapid rise

look whats in net unless reimer gets back to rookie form we can try all we want to win it won't matter

Leafs need a lot of work, and drafting a number one centre without having to trade for one would go a long way to making this team better in the long term.

This looks like a very good draft in general. Would be a great year to sell off some assets, and then then try out a bunch of our young players.

-gives our young guys a chance to play in the NHL. Kadri has been waiting for a legitimate shot for years
-likely gives us a higher pick (aka we'll lose more)
-gives us more picks in a good draft

Ideally we'll get a top centre, one of MacKinnon, Barkov, Lindholm, or Monahan, and then a top goalie later in the 1st round, Fucale woulld be great to get.

kadri is one guy I'm done with don't see him as anything

Without a doubt. The draft is stacked, we desperately need another blue chipper.

Im close to that. My only reservation being that he's never been given a reasonable shot in the top 6 at the NHL level. His skill may be more obvious if he gets to play with more skilled linemates.

I think right now we're hoping he can become a solid 2nd liner. But either way, I think theres a logjam up front for forwards, there are 6 pending free agents up there, we may as well make room and see what we have, and get some picks in the meantime.

How is the Draft Lottery weighed this year? Wasn't there talk of the league changing it up due to the shortened season?

I think its the exact same as previous years, but now whoever wins the lottery moves up to 1st overall. Im pretty sure 8th last is the lowest pick to ever win the lottery and move up due to the really low odds, but in the past you could only move up 4 spots. NJ won a few years ago, moved up and got Larsson, but they could have moved up and gotten RNH under the new rules.

Only the bottom 15 teams are in the lottery, and the% chance of the 15th team of winning for example is something like 0.5%.

IMO, perfect year to suck. Short season so it wont be too unbearable. Good draft coming up. New(ish) GM so, he shouldn't have any expectations on him.

This is a yearly thread! yay!

Ha, to be fair, in the past its pretty much been about full rebuilds that would equal tanking for 2+ years.

This year its just about a one year tank job. Our prospect pool / NHL youth is good enough that adding one top top C prospect could set things for the future.

We also have far more pending UFAs then in previous years.

There is a draft lottery so there is no guarantee that the team finishing last will get the #1 pick. Why do people not understand this?

Do you understand that the lottery is heavily weighed in favour of the the worse teams? And did you know that you don't need the #1 overall to get a #1 center this year? Probably be able to get that #1 C in the top 6 or 7...

I wonder if Burke was canned for his refusal to tank, while still not even coming close to the playoffs, and having no Tavares or Stamkos types to show for it?

Star players aren't going to be bowled over by a 9-13th place finish in the East, either.

This is a yearly thread! yay!

That's what happens when a team hasn't made the playoffs in almost a decade and doesn't have a stacked farm team/huge potential to show for it.

I want to see this team do really well in the playoffs or getting a really good draft pick. I'm fed up of not making the playoffs AND having a crappy pick to show for it.
