Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

He prioritized the 4 Nations over a cup run. He could have had half the year off, full year off to get that rehabilitated for the playoffs. He and the team chose not to. Would have freed up significant cap space as well. Who over let him play should be fired immediately.
It’s funny because he also scored 0 goals and lost at the 4N as well

lol at his injury being an “unsubstantiated claim” that requires proof. Like you and Matthews are in some kind of academic debate 😂

So is there proof, or just “Believe me brah”?

Remind me again what your medical credentials are? Just wondering what qualifications you have that you’re able to confidently cast doubt on the legitimacy of his injury, from your vantage point at home on your couch

Generally when athletes suffer injuries severe enough to effectively make them a non-factor over a prolonged period- to the point that they may as well have not played at all- it is significant enough that continued treatments and/or surgery are required to resolve it.

If Matthews is to be taken at his word though, this was no such injury, and it will magically be guaranteed to heal itself in the next five months without further intervention even though it began bothering him approximately eight months ago, went away, then mysteriously flared up for an extremely specific period of time that happened to coincide exactly with the second round.

That is to say, it’s more likely Auston Matthews is full of shit and you are happily eating it than this being some freak physiological condition that should be studied by medical journals.

I am on Team Draisaitl because he clearly is and always has been a superior player. In this era, there's McDavid and then there's Draisaitl, MacKinnon and Kucherov (for forwards).

I respectfully disagree that Matthews is anywhere close to that same level. Tonight is exhibit A. Draisaitl is better.
I don't understand why you're acting like this, but anyways... There have been seasons where Matthews is superior. A few years ago, anyone who picked Draisaitl (like me) was laughed at. Things change quickly.

Leafs could have traded him to Arizona before his last deal expired and landed Keller, Cooley +++
Saravelli saying this morning Matthews played with a back injury. Matthews says today he got injured in the preseason and went to Europe to get treatment. Imo if a guy has been injured the whole season, and he’s going to Europe for treatment, and it’s his back, he’s got a very serious issue. That’s definitely not a good sign.

Toronto media headline: How ‘fearless warrior’ captain Matthews playing through back injuries spark similarities to Mario Lemieux.

Give the guy the Purple Hart, one of the toughest players out there

Because JT (and Marner) only has one more year on the contract and likely gone. So the team has to transfer the C to someone with some stability in tenure. The only other big name players under contract are Rielly and Nylander. So they could be options too. But AM is the biggest name and goal scorer too, so it went to him.

You cant consider giving it to any other player as the team is constructed of mostly short term fly by night players who come and go or arent scorers unless the team really wants to give it to grittier guys like Domi or Tanev who at the time had already signed for years. Most sports teams like to give the C to an all star player. Not always though. But most of the time.
Wait, what?

It is not normal to strip the C from upcoming UFAs.

Not the worst ever, that's just silly. He's pretty bad though. Scheifele is not considered close to Matthews in terms of talent, but has the same number of career playoff goals in 9 fewer playoff games. This is a large sample size now. Matthews playoff scoring always drops from regular season. You don't win with these players making half of your salary cap.
