WC: Team USA 2025 - Golden

We’re still waiting for the Leafs to win a game 7…. That streak may go on til I die.

While it is the classic "gambler's fallacy" to count on something based on past results, when in reality they're independent from each other... all streaks do come to an end, for better or for worse.

I may be no longer of this world when Toronto finally wins a game 7 or the USA wins a semifinal, however.

Finland has a crazy high number of high-end players still participating in the NHL postseason.

Here are the players they have on their world championship team under NHL affiliation.

Goalie - Jusse Saros (most important)
Backup Goalie - Justus Annunen (backup Goalie to Saros in Nashville and here)
Defenseman - Arto Leppanen (played in Liiga this season, signed as a veteran Euro UDFA by Oilers a month ago to a 1 year deal for 2025-26)
Defenseman - Nikolas Matinpalo (split season in NHL Ottawa and AHL Belleville), extended to a 2 year deal starting 2025-26
Forward - Teuvo Teravainen (second most important, 58 point NHL producer this year)
Forward - Eeli Tolvanen (next most important, 35 point NHL producer this year)
Forward - Juuso Parssinen (16 NHL points across three different teams as he was traded twice during the year)
Forward - Mikael Pyyhtia (prospect in last year of ELC, split season across NHL Columbus and AHL Cleveland, not sure on future)
Forward - Lenni Hameenaho (prosect that played in Liiga this most recent year)
Forward - Waltteri Merela (26 year old Qualified RFA (to retain rights) who left North America after failing to secure a roster spot and played in NLA)

If USA loses in the Quarters, it won't be because they didn't bring enough talent compared to their opposition, but due to Finland playing a better structure/executing better.

Yeah, no excuse for USA to lose to Finland in the quarters. Between Dallas and Florida, nearly all of Finland's NHL national team talent is unavailable.

However, USA does seem to be gelling at the right time. They looked very dangerous today.

You won't lose this one.

Finland will be a great test to see what the team learned, if anything, from the Switzerland game. We'll have the talent advantage for sure. Will it matter?

Next Olympics might be a bridge too far but I really think Nazar is a future player on a first choice team USA. Can skate, competes, gets to the net, plays all situations, and has plenty of skill. Looks like a guy that has everything you want except size.

Agree 100%. Most people forgot how good Nazar was when he had those injuries.

6-1 USA. Keller, Cooley, Nazar, Beniers and Garland will skate circles around us. Tage will be too strong as well.

You guys are better than Czechia and I'm pretty sure you rather see Finland in the QF than facing Sweden...

The US wouldn't allow long stretches of the Czechs hemming in the defensive zone. Was really impressed with getting puck up n out of the US zone.

Continue that with another game of great forechecking. US will be good to go. Loved the poise after the Necas goal as well. Didn't fold after the Czechs grabbed momentum.

You can't fall behind. If Finland gets ahead by a goal (or 2), they'll lock everything down and you'll struggle to get to the net.

And, of course, there's the IIHF refs calling every flop.

Finland always plays us ugly and typically over performs, tomorrow is going to be a game with less open ice than with Czechia..if we stick with more north south vs east west nonsense we should have a strong game.

We are in big trouble if Finland is able to slow the pace down like they want to play. We need to get behind their D and keep the pressure on them. We always do well against Finland when we are able to that. We are not doing usually well against them when they are able slow the game down because we fail to do those things. We are going home if we start to play their game.

Outside of a brief team meeting at 11 a.m. at the team hotel, the U.S. had today off. A handful of players received treatments at the hotel from the physio staff of Daryl Moore and Peewee Willmann, and Brian Galivan, Team USA’s performance coach, offered the opportunity for players to run through a six-station neuro charge that utilized resistance bands and medicine balls.

Typical USA Hockey. They can play like shit and still they always have off days when they could work on those issues.

Sports science. Rest and recovery.

"Finnish optimism" as my friend Aku used to say. USA may win. No way the margin is more than one or two goals.

Finland always plays teams tough.
