the first line seems to be quiet the past several games, i havent really tuned in to the games much but curious about the 1st line.

Is marner in a slump as in not making good plays etc which is resulting in the line going cold
or is matthews just not finishing?

People have this unhealthy notion in mind that Toronto's guys are going to somehow going keep pace with McDavid and Draisaitl. It's just not going to happen.

Marner is on roughly a 100 point 82 game pace.

Matthews is on roughly a 100 point 82 game pace.

That's super elite man. It's not McDavid and Draisaitl, but it's still amazing.

Last time we played a full season, only 6 players in the NHL scored 100 points that season. Of those 6 players, the one with the fewest games played was McDavid at 78. The other 5 guys were between 79-82 games played.

Matthews and Marner are both right on the verge of producing at that 100+ point pace in that same 78-82 game sample size.

Marner has been great all season, leafs were on a PDO bender with unsustainable shooting %

Matthews for sure has been injured for weeks, probably the most worrisome leaf issue right now

oh come on, man! Marner is amazing, Matthews is not injured as people would have you believe, he can still snap that wrist shot like it's nobody's business, just hasn't had the puck luck the last few games.. it'll come today when they face the Oil, book it!
Exactly, they will both be ok.

I think we need to put Thornton back up there. He distirbutes the puck so well and works as a bumper for both guys to get into open space.

He's slow and old but he's been the best fit there imo.

Matthews is hurt

Marner has been disappointing recently

Sad thing is Matthews is hurt and Marner is playing worse than him

That's the last thing they need. Thornton's too slow for that line. Can't count the number of plays he had killed when M&M started buzzing. That line needs Hyman there consistently. That's what it would take to get them out of this slump.

Or splitting them up might help too.

Slumping points wise , yes !
Opportunity wise , no !
Chances wise , no !
Will the points come back ? Of course !
Why ?
Because !
The fact that these 2 have been elite athletes and hockey players their entire lives and have produced their entire careers at the highest level possible.
cmon !
Do you actually think that a 2 week or so period in their lives and careers of not “ getting the most points possible “ is going derail them forever ?

I can't be too upset with either given that they are each producing over a PPG.

Oh good grief. The puck just isn’t going in. It’s hockey, it happens.

Matthews shot still not 100%

Need a proper LW as well. This line needs another shooter. I think Gally needs to be the guy.

Matthews is definitely slumping. but there is nothing wrong with saying that, it happens. Playing over 22:00 a night the last 10 is not protecting an injured player. He has a history of not being able to immediately crank it up after missing time and will have to play through it. Marner is harder for me to criticize because his numbers are better and when the trigger man not is hitting it the playmaker isn't getting as many assists.

I can't buy the weak setup argument because Matthews shoots the lights out with every winger. 3g in 12 games is not him. He is getting as much ice time as ever but the last 5 games only taking 2-3 shots a night which is also not him. If he was honestly hurting I think Keefe plays the crap out of JT and the other older centers but 24:43 against the Sens tells me the coach is just rolling him out through a slump. Maybe he is banged up but to me its just in his head.
