Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

Joey Anderson is better than both but not getting chances for some unknown reason. The 1 game he played he had a better game than any game Vesey or Barabanov have played all year.

Probably because Vesey can eat safe minutes defensively which a team will pick up if he goes on waivers. Anderson is still waivers-exempt. I doubt Anderson has shown that he's better than Vesey enough to lose depth to waivers.

We have no 3rd line. If Keefe doesn't wake up the honeymoon will end with a thump. We are looking at another fold until Simmonds gets back.

lol I just imagine Jimmy logging into HF after the game and seeing this as the top thread

I don't know why people think he's any good defensively. He didn't have that reputation in NY. Also, his career corsi is well below 50% despite having had about a 50%/50% split between offensive and defensive zone starts.

We have no 3rd line.

Our actual 3rd line is sprinkled into our top-6 because Thornton, Robertson and Simmonds are injured. Our 3rd line right now is mostly our 4th line, and our 4th line right now is mostly our 5th line. And we're still doing well, those 2 lines are playing safe minutes and even scoring sometimes.

Provided he’s slotted on the third line and lower, there’s nothing too bad about Vesey being a replacement level player. After all, he’s a replacement level player. I think the reason why the Leafs have these skilled guys playing these roles is they like having the skating and puck handling ability but generally I don’t think they’re expecting him to pan out and regain his rookie hype form.

I don't think this thread was started based on his play in NYR and god forbid Buffalo. Any player that comes out of Buffalo with near-even Corsi is an elite defensive player in my books.

More seriously, he has 52% Corsi for the Leafs and a CF-rel% +3.3 5v5.

No one is saying he should get Selke votes, he's just playing safe minutes, which is fine for a sub-$1m player when you have a full line of injured middle-six players.

Pretty close.

I think he's a pro player, but on a good NHL team like this he sticks out like a sore thumb.

Once Thornton and Robertson return he's in tough to hold on to a spot.

Spot on. He’s not a defensive specialist or even a role player or grinder or energy guy. Let’s be clear. He’s a cheap roster filler player for a bottom six role who once possessed some higher end potential and has a good skillset.

he's a fine extra forward, as he can slot in and not really hurt you. But he's not a regular NHLer, especially now that Robertson is cleared to play

You are not getting it. The Leafs only react when it is too late. Then they trade a good young guy for a dud.(Courtnall, Niedermayer, Rask, Steen) all weren't good enough for the Leafs. Take action now.
