Is it time to change the name of the trophies awarded?

Conn Smyth is the only award I argued should be changed because of the person’s character. But, the actual argument has nothing to do “woke culture” and demonizing people of the past.

The argument I’m presenting is: The awards should be named after the great players that truly built this sport not executives or guys who barely played. Just food for thought.

Jeff Marek brought this up on todays episode of the Jeff Marek show and I agree with him. I think it’s time to rename some the awards. We have no awards named after Wayne, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Etc. Nearly all the awards are named after executives.

-Conn Smyth was a racist.

-Art Ross, despite being an innovator, had 1 point in the 3 nhl games played.

-James Norris was an owner of several organizations but it’s not like he ever played.

-The Hart trophy was donated by the Hart family, Cecil Hart was the coach of the Montreal Canadians.

-Ted Lindsay’s name being on a trophy is well deserved and I’d want that one to stay.

-Georges Vezina only played 88 NHL games.

-The Bill Masterton trophy is named after the only player to die in the NHL from on-ice related injury.

-Frank Calder was the first President of the NHL.

-Frank Selke was a successful GM.

-William Jennings was the president of the Rangers

-Maurice Rocket Richard is obviously an award who’s name shouldn’t change.

I’d like to see:
Conn Smyth: Jean Beliveau Award
Art Ross: Wayne Gretzky Award
Hart: Gordie Howe Award
Frank Selke: Patrice Bergeron Award
Calder: Teemu Selanne Award
Vezina: Vladislav Tretiak Award
Jennings: Dominick Hasek Award
Norris: Orr-Lidstrom Award
Change change change. Enough already. This is the way it is and this is the way it’s gonna stay.

sure. i heard lord stanley never even wore skates.

also let's update some archaic team names. i mean who says bruin anymore and what's a red wing? and who in toronto thought it was auspicious to name a team after a vegetable appendage that falls to the ground every november and rots all winter?

time to get with the times.

Due to injuries. Scored 50+ every year except his final season in the NHL. 573 goals in 752 games. Laugh all you want but he might be the greatest pure goal scorer in NHL history.
he wasn't even the best goal scorer when he played.

After a player still playing
Tretiak never played a game in the NHL

Critical thinking here: Are all forms of racism bad?
Critical thinking here2: How do you define racism?
Critical thinking here3: Where did you first hear about the term?

The OP has an agenda. Engaging in retrospective bigoteering. Weak attempt too, didn't even do his homework. A lazy lame ass shot at stirring some shit. Best of luck next time. Love the spirit, but weak execution.
You are actually missing the point of my post. I’m not a politician lol I have no agenda.

The point of the post is to point out that almost none of the awards are named after great players and I think that should change.

At the top of your list was Smythe and his racism, knowing full well the explosive nature that comes with this type of accusation in the current zeitgeist.

In people's subconscious, all the rest of your enumeration was irrelevant.

You tried to stirred some shit around Smythe's racism, engaging in retrospective bigoteering. Despicable tactic.

Despicable.

What I said was a fact. Conn Smyth was a racist who refused to sign Herb Carnegie because he was black. That’s racism. I think that’s a solid reason the trophy should be renamed especially because Herb was recently put into the HOF.

You are over thinking this whole post because you are sensitive to the issue of “PC/Woke Culture”. It’s okay to say that a trophy should be named after a legend in the game rather than that guy.

Instead of renaming the individual trophies, which have iconic names independent of their actual namesakes, why not honour ‘newer’ hockey legends with new trophies? That’s the best of both worlds, right? With that in mind, I present you with 4 new trophies awarded to the divisional winners each season:

Pacific: Wayne Gretzky Trophy
Central: Gordie Howe Memorial Trophy
Metropolitan: Mario Lemieux Trophy
Atlantic: Bobby Orr Trophy

I could definitely get behind a few renames. Only ones I'd prefer to keep are the Hart, simply because the name of it fits what it's for really well, the Vezina, Lindsay, Masterson and Rocket.

You'd never hear the end of it from the traditionalists but who cares what they think. They'll all be gone soon anyways.

No.

I'd favour new awards come in with more modern names attached - assist leader = Gretzky etc.

Also, much of your reasoning for name changes is the lack of relevancy then you go and suggest that the Vezina be named for a goalie who never even played in NA. No matter how good he may have been, it doesn't really follow your argument. Make it the Roy or Hasek instead.

Downgrading Vezina to "only played 88 games" (which isn't even correct) is one of the most astoundingly ignorant comments made about hockey history.

Vezina is arguably the greatest goalie from the first 70 years of hockey.

I hate this suggestion to my very core.
Agree so much!

Also, how many NHL games did Tretiak play? I believe the number is ZERO... So the OP wrongly states that Vezina should be replaced because he only played 80 games (actually 190 + 138 NHA) while suggesting someone who played zero!

I wouldn’t change the names, but I wouldn’t mind adding a trophy for the assists leader and name it after Gretzky and another one for the Dman scoring leader and name it after Orr.

Need an award for the best overall D man. Both ends of the ice. You know somebody who plays defense and doesn't rely on his center to do all the work for him. I'm tired of these ballerinas getting all the credit when other people have to do their work.

Greatest goalie in the first 70 years? That’s a hot take man. Glenn Hall, Sawchuk, Plante, Durnan? That’s an insane take imo. They made the award 1935 and he was the first goalie for the Canadians. That’s why a trophy is named after him.
