Is Georges Laraque the greatest fighter of all time

I've always been partial to Tony Twist. He didn't play for long and he never had the rep of someone like Probert, but good god he could throw.

(Pardon the music)

But he didn't stop when his opponent was on a knee! Classless POS! lol, Twist gets my vote as better than Laroque, as does Domi, Schultz,Boogard, Williams,Brown,Probert, Kocur,

At their peaks I'd say alot of the 80s and 90s goons were better than Laraque.

Kocur
Probert
Twist
Odjick
Nilan
Domi
Grimson
Williams
Simon
Semenko

then we have O'Reilly, Robinson and Gillies

Laraque could beat all those guys in a fight. Only difference is that he never murdered someone. He lacked the killer instinct of a true enforcer. He's way too nice for that.

Even though I think that statement is completely wrong, even if it were true it doesnt matter because the mind set is a huge part about being the top enforcer of all time. Most of the top guys looked like they wanted to hurt people when they fought, Laraque got kicked off one of the softest teams in the league because he didnt want to fight.

He was a great fighter, much better than a few guys on that list, which this thread is about according to the title.

For instance he could handle Nilan easily IMO. But as enforcers go, Nilan was much more effective. Much better hockey player as well.

To me, fighter is synonymous with enforcer in hockey. Teams dont employ fighters in hockey for any other purpose except to enforce and being a good fighter in hockey includes the fighting skill, knowing when to fight and having that enforcer policeman mentality. Laraque MIGHT have been a better technical fighter than some guys I would rank ahead of him but as an overall fighter in hockey definitely not

I don't think I ever saw Laracque throw a punch. I always thought he was a great wrestler...until he met JSP. :)

I remember Kordic having great fights, and Clark Gillies was a BEAST!

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: oh god... you're not joking.
He almost never lost a fight. He went up against the bests of the bests through a 13 years career and his number of losses is probably in the single digits or low double digits. He was a good fighter but as I said before, he never really beat up anybody like Brashear or Probert did. He could definitely fight any fighter to a standstill and beat all of them but not utterly beat them down.

That's why I said he was too much of a nice guy. He never beat anyone to a pulp but he could definitely beat anyone. That includes Probert who's widely viewed as the greatest fighter of all time. Difference is Probert beat down people more badly than Laraque did. Laraque could pull a comfortable win against Probert, but he would definitely not dominate him. It's like that against pretty much everyone for him.

For example:

Cote vs Laraque

Now look at what Brashear did to him. Brasher is far more aggressive but nobody thinks he was a better fighter than Laraque.

Why post those videos, Riley Cote never won fights. Heres 1999 Probert, a couple of years from retirement while Laraque is at his absolute best and the champ of the league. I won't say Probert won this fight but it was definitely close and this is a 99 version of Probert. Probert holds his own against a prime BGL when hes that old, you honestly think Laraque would do that well against a late 80s Probert? I highly doubt it, youre overrating Laraque to say he could handle guys like Probert in their primes

In the book 'The Code', Twist was talking about fighting one of his buddies (forget who it was) once.

Twist won the fight, and as he was laying on top of him, his buddy says: 'loser buys dinner.' Twist says "well you're the loser!" Buddy says "yeah, but the winner buys the beer *******!"

Always got a kick out of that.

No way is he best.

Laraque was a great fighter but not the best. I feel as many do, Probert was the man. Probert lost his share however Probert took on anybody that wanted to go and Proberts fights tended to be all out brawls. He went full tilt, where Laraque had a lot of boring fights where he just out muscled his opponent because he was so bloody strong. I would say that Laraque was probably the strongest fighter ever.

Not top 15 even of all time. Probert, Wilson, Brown, Kocur, Kordic, Gillies, Twist, etc..........................................Maybe even Brashear. But him and Brashear would have a hard tim punching in a bear hug/clinch.

Every fighter loses, but probert seemed to lose the least out of anyone. If you search his fights on youtube or just remember from watching his games it is rare to find a loss.

Probert lost enough to make some people question if he should be number 1 all time but wow whenever he lost he would absolutely kill the guy the next fight. I dont think he lost a fight and didnt kill the guy next time. Domi fought him to a draw, pulled out his belt antics and got absolutely thumped for it

Your right he did lose, but after reading everyone posts and their opinions on who is the toughest guy of all time (Domi, Dave Brown, Mcsorly, Semenko, etc) i know probert has beat them bad. In my opinion i think probert is the best, but i am also biased because i grew up watching the wings because my dad was a fan. In a devils advocate role i honestly think it is way to hard to say anyone is the toughest fighter ever just because there is so many tough guys in different eras and they all had different fighting styles. For example in the 70's and 80's and early 90's fighters did not train to fight, they played hockey but happened to be the biggest and strongest guys on the team so they protected their teammates. In the days of Larouqe, Brashear and fighters now, they are just guys who are their to fight. They can not play hockey at all and their off season consists of fighting mma and taking boxing lessons rather then playing hockey. Thats why if you havnt noticed sometimes heavyweight fights in todays game can be borderline boring, because now fighting has become so technical where as before they just threw for the fences.
