No he is not overrated. Panarin is still elite. He has just had two consecutive 90+ point seasons.

However his playoff performance this season have been extremely underwhelming but definitely not overrated.

Nobody doubts the skill, the flash, the passion. But the guy seems to routine turn into a floater in the playoffs, and the last two years have been particularly glaring.

He’ll almost always collect points, but in terms of driving play or taking over games, Im not sure there are many guys in his price range that do it less when the games matter.

Thoughts?

Jack Hughes had only 2 points at 5v5.

Panarin is only being highlighted because the Rangers lost.

He was absolutely garbage last year too, outside of a single shot.
Absolutely garbage?

He had 16 points in 20 games.

He was being highlighted even after a game 6 win

He would’ve been highlighted if they won tonight

He was god awful…again

Almost entirely on the PP and secondary assists. They were empty points. He even called himself out for how poor his play was last offseason

He was, yes. The same as Fox, Zibanejad, Kreider, Kane, Trocheck, Miller and so on.

After game 2, our entire top players got outplayed and out battled on every area of the ice.

To single out Panarin is not fair at all.

Year 1 and 2 with the Rangers, he was a MVP caliber player who at least came back on defense and forechecked. Last year, he evolved into a full perimeter player who began coasting and avoiding the net. He also didnt want to play with anyone besides Strome. Then he cried when we let Strome go. This year was worse. He wasnt garbage in the regular season but was lazy and a turnover machine.

Was he garbage in the playoffs this year? Absolutely! Should we get rid of him? Absolutely! Most unlikeable Rangers "star" player I can ever recall.

Hell no.
The Rangers are just a slow, soft, offensively inept team with no system and a caveman for a coach. If he were on a team that went to the net, knew how to transition, etc he would be doing just fine in the playoffs like he did under Torts.

And the cap hit, well he was the headliner of the last free agent class before Covid lockdowns and economic collapse. Those other guys with comparable contracts weren’t UFA’s. Also, what would Drury do with that money instead? He traded Buchnevich for cap savings just to spend even more money on Blais, Nemeth, Reaves & Goodrow.

Remove Panarin and you remove half of the offensive skill this pathetic team has.

The style of player that Panarin is are generally overrated. Players like him win you fantasy hockey championships, not cups.

He's the ideal No. 3 option on a great team.

But 14-15% of your cap? Not sure about that.

He has 46 pts in 57 Playoff Games. Is it fair to say he always floats at playoff time? Obviously had a bad year this year, but last year he was near a ppg.
