I think they need to re-sign Stralman.

Its perilous to tie the future to McIlrath in any way at this point in time.

The last two games have shown that when the going gets tough Klein steps up and plays tough and Stralman does not. Stralman is a good player who is fine in your bottom pairing or in the top four against non-physical teams. the problem is in the playoffs he is likely to get pushed around. Since he is a UFA, he should be on the block for the right deal. After watching these last two games and considering that McD, Girardi and Staal can all handle big minutes I am ready for McIlrath to add toughness while playing sheltered minutes. We need to be tougher and he is the only guy we have (barring a trade for a physical forward) in the system who has legitimate toughness and is projected to play with the big club in the next year or so. Move Stralman, bring up McI and let's see what happens.

Stralman has been one of the Ranger's best d-men the last two playoffs. He's actually one of few players (along with Boyle and McD) who upped their play come playoff time.

This keeps getting brushed aside for some reason. You can argue there's no room for Stralman in the coming years but that's where the argument ends.

This exactly. He's great value for being grabbed for the scrap heap. If there's a good return out there, time to move him now.

on the other hand, if there is not, then you keep him at a reasonable cost...

However, I fully agree that Klein is the better player that should be playing with Staal...

The more I think about it, moving Stralman to the 3rd pairing may just be a negotiating tactic to say "hey look, Klein's been better than you, and you've been stuck on the 3rd pair. We're going to offer you a 3rd pairing salary"

Agreed.

I really can't see the problem in having to many d-men in the system. The cap won't be much of a problem in this case. If Stralman wants to stay I can see him getting 3.5, tops. You just don't hand a rookie a spot on the roster because he's tough and right handed. He has to earn it. If he does your're dealing from a position of strenght to upgrade somehwhere else on your roster.

I think that statement is a little strong. Both McI and Allen are close to ready. I guess it depends on what Stralman can fetch in the market. Having McI play sheltered minutes and provide an answer to the likes of Simmonds, Lucic and Iginla would be helpful at this time. This team showed it can really skate but it can be pushed around.

I don't feel strongly either way but I am curious what kind of impact McI can make since we clearly have a need for his type of player and with Stralman as a UFA I'd like to see what we can get. If the answer is nothing good then hold on to him try and sign him and then if McI is ready deal him from strength.

In any other season one of those two would have made the roster by now. We just have very good defensive depth this season (And yes, I know we've lost the last two games, it doesn't change that fact)

I'd have no problem with signing Stralman to a 3 year contract around $3 mil per as long as there was no NTC or NMC attached. Rangers could then move him when McIlrath or Allen are ready.

The other options are to deal him now for whatever you can get or let him ride out the season and have him available for this year's playoffs. Not sure the market is going to be huge for him if he becomes a UFA--at least in respect to length of term or $.

i say trade him.

Klien has looked good with staal and with strals on the 3rd pairing and losing him to FA just like everyone else id rather gain assets.

As for the 6D Falk/Allen/McIlrath should be able/ready to step in

I don't think that's necessarily the reason they'd entertain trading him though. Allen should be ready for bottom-pairing minutes next year, and Klein has been playing very well along-side Staal on the 2nd pairing.

There's also the issue of Richards. If we buy him out, we lose a presence on the point for the powerplay. Stralman has seen virtually zero time there, so it's a pretty big assumption to assume he could fill that role even on the 2nd unit. If we re-sign Stralman, where is the offense coming from on the blue line? Barring a giant leap forward from Moore, it's basically McDonagh with 25 points a piece from Girardi and Staal. That's just not enough from the defense.

Has there been ANY reports of what hes asking? Any reports that they are even talking?

Really starting to believe he will walk. Klein playing a bigger role the last 2 games. McD/G/Klein signed long term, Staal up for contract next year. Difficult to have five defenseman locked into money.

I do not remember how good or bad Stralman was in the playoffs last year. I do remember what I saw this weekend against two teams with size who should be in the hunt for the EC title. And Anton struggled. btw, don't forget Brass when listing guys who stepped up and Boyle was good against Ottawa two years ago and hasn't been good since.

In answer to thread question........seems since we got him. He's been very valuable to THIS team, and yes he is yet another tough decision to make. U can never have enough Dmen come PO's, so I believe we should sign him to a decent contract asap.........say 2 years this time, he deserves it, and if all goes well with rookie replacements we could then trade him come next trade deadline.

If you can talk him into a 2y deal at 2.5-3m? sign him. He wants 3+ years? trade him. if he is the asset needed to be added to make a bigger deal? trade him.

He is good flexibility for the rangers right now. Lots of ways to go with him, and Rangers can still be happy.

I still think that Stralman's value to the team this year is greater than any trade return they're likely to get. Even if he walks, I say no to trading him.

The question is the view of him. Do you view him as a #4 defenseman on basically any team in the league? If not, and a team is willing to give you 2 pair value in a trade, then you move him. I think that he offers fantastic value given that he was scooped off of the refuse pile, but that he is not someone that I would completely be at ease with as the #4 defenseman. And if he is a third pairing defenseman, then he needs to be paid like one.

Like I said, he is both underrated and overrated at the same time. But I do not believe that he is an integral part of the future. Definitely not the long-term and probably not the short-medium term.

I think Stralman is currently a defender who can play the #3 role on most teams and the #4 regularly. He is a classic 2nd pairing guy.

Hes affordable and I think he will want to remain a Blueshirt.

I hope he stays. I hope they can sign him for cheap

Calling him a #3 defender on most teams is a classic example of overrating him, IMO.

The guy is a stretch 4 defenseman. Not an impact player, but he's been great in his time here until recently.

This is the 1st time Anton is playing top 4 minutes in a playoff run. As the games have gotten more important, and teams are playing tighter you can see a dip in his performance as of late.

Now a few games doesn't alter what he's done the last several months, but he needs to pick up the slack as too too many guys have gotten past him. Teams with speed can exploit him, too many scoring wingers are getting past him, and his pinches have been terrible.... He has no offensive ability, why is he pinching when there are guys behind him. You think he'd learn after the first penalty shot that caused.

Hell you think he'd learn not to take a penalty on a breakaway with Hank in net. He's giving up 2 clean chances on the goalie instead of one.

I don't really disagree with anything you said, but you kinda missed the point of my post. His value in terms of putting out a team that can win games this year was greater than the return he would have brought at the deadline, which was a 3rd round pick at best judging by the rest of the market. Resigning him is another matter.

Amazing how Strålman is the one getting blame for that sequence. It was Marc "apparently can do no wrong" Staal who messed that up badly, blindly throwing the puck right onto a Carolina player at a horrible spot on the ice.
