He's the guy that can play top 4 minutes and allow us to shop girardi while having some leverage in those negotiations.

I feel comfortable with him enough to move girardi and would love to see us get back a young forward in the deal.

Staal and Stralman are flat out dominant. They compliment each other very well. If I had it my way, that would be our 2nd pairing for years to come.

That's a f-in disgrace. And Torts were fine with that? I can't believe that. And people say extend with Girardi and make him captain? Hell no.

Hockey fans really need to prove how macho they every 5 minutes. It's ridiculous. Don't extend Girardi because of an incident like 4 years ago that had nothing to do with hockey?

I wasn't a fan of the Carcillo incident either but I think Girardi has more than paid us back in blocked pucks and facial cuts.

Girardi has some weaknesses in his game, but if you wanna question his heart and commitment to the team, you're barking up the wrong tree.

A) It was a long time ago

B)"I guess I was overthinking it, Girardi said. "I didn't want to take another penalty, because I knew we already had one there [on Brandon Dubinsky], but I should have gotten involved. I should have jumped in. Maybe it was the wrong decision, but it was the decision I made at the time.

"If there's a next time, I would go."

He made an error in judgment and apologized for it in the media.

And the whole thing lasted 4 seconds...

The person who really should have prevented the Gaborik-Carcillo fight was Gaborik, though.

What's most alarming is how many times Joe repeated himself in that clip.

If I were running things I'd re-sign him now. Having Stralman locked down prevents you from being handcuffed at the negotiating table with Girardi, protects you from being caught with your pants down in the event Girardi walks, and becomes a tradable asset if Girardi re-signs and McIlrath is ready.

Spot on, Crease! My view, as well.

I think this topic is due for re-visiting.

Girardi signed for 6 years. Klein has been playing with Staal. Stralman played the least minutes of any Ranger defensemen tonight.

As I said the other day, I wonder if Stralman might be considered in trade talks? Thus, the brass is trying to determine if Kline fits with Staal as a second pair D?

The teams problem stems from a lack of finishers. Mgt might be willing to risk a hit to the D if the team can pick up a much needed center (Stalman +) / scorer.

Neanderthals in upper management if they are truly deluded into believing Klein is half the player Stralman is.

Ridiculous if so.

He's better than Klein.
Just understand, that by signing Stralman, you will block off any right handed defensive prospects. I can think of one that most this board waits for. This is not a statement pro or con, just a statement.

That said, Stralman is a player who is probably both under and over rated. Under rated by his detractors and over rated by his fans. I actually fall in the middle. If the team can get a good return for him, then trade him. I do not view him as an integral part of the future.

Sign him, then figure it out in training camp.
The salary cap world does not work that way. You are locked into Klein and Girardi. Are you comfortable locking into at least 3 more years of Stralman?

Stralman did not have a very good weekend. The whole team did not. However, it highlighted his weakness. Against bigger teams that will bang him around, he tends to play smaller and quicker to make mistakes.

This exactly. He's great value for being grabbed for the scrap heap. If there's a good return out there, time to move him now.

I'm comfortable locking up Stralman for a few more years. I don't buy that this weekend exposed any concerns in his game. He's been one of our best defensemen in the playoffs the past few years, against bigger teams like the Caps and Bruins, and where the game is more physical.

Stralman is not asking for the moon. This isn't a Callahan situation. And Staal/Stralman is arguably one of the best middle pairs in the league. I see no reason to actively break them up. Let a rookie force the Rangers hand, in which case you should have no problem getting a decent return for Stralman locked in on a nice contract.

All the above goes out the window if the Rangers think McIlrath or Allen are ready now. They have better info than I do and I trust their decision.

Definitely. I can see no risk whatsoever in signing Stralman for 3 years. First of all, it will fit under the cap as he won't be very expensive. And, if McI proves he belongs, trading Stralman, Klein or Staal won't be the slightest problem. Too many good defensemen (especially right handed) are a luxury problem. Then you are dealing from a position of strength.

Signing Stralman is a no-brainer IMO.

Locking any player in is a a necessary decision in a cap world.

How did he appear to you?

$4 for 4 (just guessing) in my view is dangerous for a player like him in the cap era. This team has many holes and he could be used as a chip to upgrade.

That is conjecture and nothing more. His value decreases with a long term contract for the amount of money that he is going to demand.

Who is "they"? Jackass and Co? Has he been a bastion of good decisions?

Neanderthals in upper management if they are truly deluded into believing Klein is half the player Stralman is.

The last two games have shown that when the going gets tough Klein steps up and plays tough and Stralman does not. Stralman is a good player who is fine in your bottom pairing or in the top four against non-physical teams. the problem is in the playoffs he is likely to get pushed around. Since he is a UFA, he should be on the block for the right deal. After watching these last two games and considering that McD, Girardi and Staal can all handle big minutes I am ready for McIlrath to add toughness while playing sheltered minutes. We need to be tougher and he is the only guy we have (barring a trade for a physical forward) in the system who has legitimate toughness and is projected to play with the big club in the next year or so. Move Stralman, bring up McI and let's see what happens.
