Pay Stralman.

Trade Staal for O'Reilly.

Trade Brassard for Leddy to make up for losing Staal.

Leddy makes 2.7. He's 23. LD. Skates like the wind.

Chicago needs a 2C.

Perhaps we even add to it and steal Morin.

Brassard + Skjei for Leddy and Morin.

Leddy is what we pray Skjei will eventually develop into.

Either way, replacing Staal(3.9) with Leddy(2.7) creates the cap-space to pay Stralman, while also solving our LD hole created by trading Staal to acquire ROR.

If Chicago likes Brassard, this could be a match made in heaven IMO.

Leddy certainly isn't as good defensively as Staal, but he's better offensively and is a much faster and more mobile defenseman, while being younger (23) and cheaper (2.7 for another year before RFA).

A player's value isn't linked to his actual ability, but the perception of that ability. Klein still has a good rep around the league.

Remember when Douglas Murray, a below replacement-level player, fetched not one but TWO 2nd round picks at the deadline.

I wasn't the one who said a third pair guy on a crap contract would fetch a round two pick. I just found that contradiction funny. Klein can possibly snag a round two pick for all the reasons the person I quoted didn't state. Even that is not guaranteed. I don't assume anyone's rep around the league or what trade trends are. Last year's trade deadline, for instance, yielded pretty lousy returns.

And remember when Scott Gomez fetched Higgins and McDonagh? Horrible trades are not the norm and not too effective to use to make points.

The problem is that Chicago has even less cap space than we do. Why else do you think guys like Leddy and Sharp would be available?

And Colorado isn't going to trade ROR for Staal without Staal getting signed to an extension. Would he want to re-sign out there?

With CHI's limited cap space, Brassard is likely among the best 2C's they could get. I'm not sure he'd get more than 3.8-4.0 mil from an arbiter.

It's not fact that COL wouldn't trade for Staal. That's simply your opinion, and while it's certainly a valid one, I don't see them getting a much better deal, and I can definitely see Staal re-signing there anyway. Tons of offensive talent up front. With Staal next to EJ, they could surprise a lot of teams out West.

I like it. It is the sort of creativity they need to be thinking of.
