Interesting Stats to Dissect: Giveaways

Stat tracking variance from building to building has been discussed.

Obviously, good players have the puck on their stick more is a generally sound argument. If you have the puck more you have more opportunities to give it away. It doesn’t make you a liability, it just means you may be the one relied upon to drive things and thus you’re going to be the one ending up with the giveaway most often.

But also, not every player who is an elite offensive producer is the same type of player. Some guys make their living cycling near the half boards and looking for seams to set up a play. Some guys are most dangerous off the rush. Some guys make quick passes and don’t keep the puck on their stick very long but instead get into open ice, receive the puck, quickly move it to advance the play and go find more open ice to receive it again. Some guys just kind of have that innate sense of where to be and don’t play a big role in the transition game but sort of “appear” in the right place in the offensive zone to get a shot off or make a play.

Each of those types of players is going to have different likelihoods of being in a position to give the puck over with different frequency. All of them can still be elite players.
