Which is why I don't get some people's exasperation with Richards. I think we have the makings of a really good coach behind our bench. He may make some lineup choices or in-game non-decisions that some don't agree with, but he's doing something right. He's getting these guys to play for him. And in my book, he's still a relatively young coach who has time and room to grow in his deficient areas.

I agree. The boys play for him and respect him, it would seem. I also like the fact that he's an under-the-radar kind of personality. Not a fan of coaches who by personality or reputation become the story over the team's play. I'll take a solid character from Minnesota over big name big "show" types or hothead emotional types.

This was noted in today's Puckrakers:

-The Jackets have 100 points (46-28-8) in their past 82 games, dating to last season

Funny how the Island of Misfit Toys has worked. A collection of spare parts assembled by a GM that few people respected and coached by a guy who was regarded in Minnesota as clueless has 100 points in the past 82 games.

And ultimately the potential of nothing to show for it if they don't get better for the remaining 28 game.

If they keep the same pace over the remaining 28 games, they will end the season with 92 points. With 58 points now, the same pace will get them 34 points over the remaining 28 games. That total could ultimately keep them out of the playoffs and if it is enough, it would be sneaking in as the 8 seed again and having to deal with Pittsburgh.

Easily my favorite coach that we've had.

I also go with Richards as my favorite CBJ coach. I give him the nod over King.

Assembled by a GM who pretty much had to have everything about how to do it explained to him by Craig Patrick.

If you split the season, thus far, into 2 x 27 games, the last 27 games the CBJ has 35 pts if my math is correct. At the same pace that would be 36 pts over the last 28 games giving them 94 for the season. I think that's realistic and should be enough to get in.

Of their remaining games:

Only 13 home games remain overall
16 games are against the Eastern Conference (8 at home)
8 games are within the Metro Division (4 at home)
12 are against the Western Conference (5 at home)

The thing that scares me most is they have the Kings, Ducks, Sharks (twice), Blackhawks (twice), Pens and Lightening(w/Stamkos). A split of those games would be very promising and go a long way to improving chances.

I think its certainly within reason. The 34 pt pace basically equals out to a 14-10-4 record over the remaining 28 games. That's not a world beating pace. If they frankly 6 out of every 10 games from here on out they should be in good shape.

Not to nitpick but, to nitpick the pace would have to be 14-8-6, 15-9-4 or 16-10-2 depending on which of the three results you hold steady.

As mentioned above with remaining games against Chi (2), Anaheim, LA, SJ(2),Montreal, Pitt & TB with Stamkos & Bishop, there is little room for error in the other games. Have to win a few of these toughies to make up for the inevitable lapses against the "weaker teams" which include Nashville (2), Detroit (2), Colorado, Minnesota,Rangers and Carolina (2). Not an easy road for sure.

To look at it another way - an 18-5-5 finish (which including the Washington win would be 19-5-5!) would get it done this time.

As of today, February 1st, 2014 the Blue Jackets and Flyers are the two worst 16 playoff qualifying teams in the league with 60 points each.... the Flyers lose the tie breaker so we are 15th....

Just an interesting stat of no value... :)

Well, the winning 6 out of 10 pace I was referring to equates to about 17 wins, not considering overtime losses, over those 28 games. Since we know a few of those can occur, If we have a 6-3-1 pace instead of a 6-4 pace occurring 10 game spans. That would put the team somewhere in this range

16-9-3 = 35 pts.
17-8-3 = 37 pts.
16-8-4 = 36 pts.

That would put them into the 93-95 point range by the end of the season.

I think the key thing is that they need to win at least 16-17 games starting with tonight and then any overtime losses are bonus points since the law of averages says there will be at least a couple but they definitely need to start bringing home 2 points in basically 2 out of 3 games from here on out. No more 3 game losing streaks. Barely any room for 2 consecutive losses.

Not every team in the metro is going to be able to keep up this pace. Some teams are going to fall out over the next couple of playing weeks. It certainly seems like the Capitals are trending towards falling out. I'm hoping NJ and Carolina can't keep the pace because they simply don't score enough goals. Philly is 4-4-2 in their last 10 and has a -11 goal differential while the CBJ have a game in hand on them.

Columbus is 4th on goal differential in the East. The other 3 have their playoff positions pretty secure. That says something for the potential to keep that minimum pace required for points.

1 down tonight, hopefully at least 15-16 more if not more.

On a related note, does anyone know of a site that has a standings breakdown of the league over a certain time period? I'd be curious to know the records and point totals, goal differentials, etc. of every team over the last 30 days. I'd like to see how other teams are trending.

Unsubstantiated supposition ????? It has been reported more than once on Puckrakers that it was Patrick who convinced Howson to dump both Nash and Carter. Howson was still operating under the Maclean imposed doctrine that it was "Nash's team". Did you not notice the change in Howson's trading style after Patrick came on board? He went from trading for names to trading for character. That distinction is how this team was built. It is not supposition. It is called deductive reasoning. There is a difference.

Now if you want to talk draft, I think Howson made a lot of good choices there (as well as some bad ones) on his own. But the way the team was re-built to focus upon came from Patrick. It was reported in national stories as well. There was even one interview with Howson where he admitted, without being specific, that he had incorporated modifications in his approach to team building as a result of input from Patrick.

Not saying that Patrick didn't have input but to say " had to have everything about how to do it explained to him" is a little over the top.

Well, considering that Howson and the franchise floundered for several years and even MacJr. publicly said they needed to get him a kind of senior advisor to help learn the tricks of his job, and then Patrick comes in and you see a completely different approach, I don't think it is that far over the top.

Agreed. This team made little to no significant movement during Howson's pre Patrick era and continued on a downward trajectory until it bottomed out after the disaster of the Carter trade. Patrick came in and in his short time here cut our losses with Carter and got decent value for that whiny @$$#@%#, and also was one of the major players in the Nash trade (Which I am surprisingly pleased with due to the culture change).

Howson has a track record of incompetence that is not erased because he was able to swing one trade that ended up coinciding with an organizational culture change (which was heavily fueled by JD).

Our front office was thin for years, if I remember correctly we were one of the few teams without a plethora of senior advisers and assistant GM's. Needing to add to our front office wasn't a sign that Howson was in unique need of help, because every front office seems to need that help. "learn the tricks of the job", do you have a link to that quote?

I do think that we were lacking direction, and I'm not of the opinion that Howson was a great GM. But his draft record was very good, our team is currently being led by brilliant Howson draft picks that pre-date Patrick.

Wasn't the Patrick hiring a recommendation from the NHL offices?

Interesting stat I was not aware of.

After being -8 in 8 games with Buffalo, Corey Tropp is +11 in 28 games with the CBJ. The highest on the team. Nikitin is +10 in 48 games.
