Where are all the nancys saying we don't need fighters and blah blah blah. That was downright embarrassing that Patches never had to answer for that coward hit last night. Embarrassing.

I hope everyone gets healthy soon, there's not much time in this season.

well, good news from Girardi. Who knows, maybe tomorrow after the training, McD, Nash and Del Zotto feel good to go.

Still, the lack of toughness needs to be addressed ASAP. Trade for Stuart.

Because that would have prevented the hit? Please. Seems to me the Bruins have some of the biggest, baddest guys around in Lucic, Thornton and Chara and yet Savard's career is pretty much done due to a much worse hit.

We can debate the psychological impact that players claim having an enforcer on the team provides (and, frankly, I think a lot of that is guys repeating what they've been told growing up in the game and/or not wanting to throw their goon teammates under the bus), but the idea that **** like this wouldn't happen if we had Colton ****ing Orr wasting a spot on our bottom line is ludicrous.

All players like that do is scratch the fans' itch to see vengeance imparted; they have NO bearing on preventing injuries in the first place.

EDIT: to be clear, I do believe that nasty defensemen and badass power forwards are more effective at PLAYING the game due to the edge they bring and other players' desire to avoid meeting them in the corners or in front of the net. My comments above are directed towards how fighters have no meaningful impact on preventing injuries.

SJ is always looking for Forwards so Boyle to them may make sense but Rangers would need a guy like Murray back as a tough rental Dman and a forward who ideally makes less than Boyle and is somewhat useful

I would love to see Clowe and Murray to NY but that may cost quite a bit

maybe Murray and Wingels for Boyle and Eminger? some picks involved?

Do you know how you get people to stop running your players?

Score on the PP that proceeds. Tell me who wants to run your players then.

In today's NHL, with the instigator rule, I agree with you. But to argue that the players are unable to police themselves is a farce, and something I vehemently disagree with.

The problem is that with the instigator the only thing a guy like Orr can do these days is fight the other teams enforcer, and what the **** does that add? Nothing.

When McDonagh got slapped, Pyatt-Richards-Gaborik were on the ice with Stralman. McDonagh got right back up after the hit. What do you expect those four guys to do? Nothing.

Bad timing I guess. I like to think if a guy like Mash, or Bickel were on the ice, something would have been done.

I do like to point to this, when this conversation comes up. Remember the game where the Capitals were all over Jagr (well, one of the games, not the Shanny game). Remember what Orr did? I do.

Blocking a shot with less than 2 min left in a decided game....thats hard to stomach for me. I'd rather lose 4-0 than lose Girardi to a broken ankle for a month.

this is where you're dead wrong. just because hits against tough teams (Bruins) still happen along with injuries doesn't mean you shouldn't have an answer. Some teams will always come after you no matter what. Having a physical deterrent of our own, prevents EVERY team from having their way with us...

I'm not talking about non functioning, broken down brawlers, but tough players that can hit hard and inflict pain and injury, albeit cleanly.. Neil, Glencross,

I really hope this serves as a wake-up call to Torts that 6 goaltenders is not the answer. Let your Vezina winning goalie make some saves, pressure the goddamned puck and move it down the ice. So frustrating to continue to watch this, especially now with the injuries mounting.

I agree, it was the bread and butter last year, but this defense is too talented without having to jump in front of every slapshot. I do admire the balls it takes to do that, but in the end if it means the blueline and the PK losing 1-2 guys every year for extended periods of time, is it worth it?

It only takes one shot to injure a star player. Shot blocking is so stupid. Does it help? Ya I guess. Is it worth the risk when you have Hank in net (i know he wasn't last night) ? No.

Yup. If comical that they choose to play their hearts out to the bitter end in the one part of the game where they really do not need to, and then injure themselves uselessly.

If they're going to play like that they need to use their brains as much as their heart and guts.

Hindsight is 20/20. What do you think would have happened if he has let the shot go past him and it would have scored?

Everybody would be calling him gutless, a player who isn't willing to sacrifice himself for the team, etc... Plus, from what I've seen of Torts, he'd surely rip him a new one for not doing what he's being ask to.

Girardi went for a percentage play. 19 times out of 20, blocking the shot is merely painful; nothing more. But every time and then, you roll a natural 1.

girardi would never be the defenseman he is if he didn't block shots. it's arguably the best part of his game

The whole team was already gutless that game.

Girardi was gutless when he didn't stick up for Gaborik. Other than that I don't think I'd ever call him "gutless." Is every other player in the league who doesn't block shots gutless and not willing to sacrifice for the team?

If it was the playoffs, and a close game, then yes that would probably be the reaction.

Pat Leonard ‏@NYDNRangers

On top of good news that Girardi right foot X-ray was negative, I'm told his right hand did not require an X-ray after his block of Plekanec

this is ridiculous, what a warrior

Depends. If your entire team has the habit and objective to support your goalie during PKs by blocking shots; then I'd think the established paradigm would be "block shots when you get the chance". Whether or not it was worth it at the time hardly plays into the player's mind when he's on the ice.

Even for 100% lost games, you will never see a goalie willingly let a goal in, or a player purposely shoot aside an open net. These guys are professionals, and are expected to at least try and perform every game they step on the ice. It's just a bad sign if any member of your team starts telling himself "why bother?".

Glad to hear the news about G. A couple of weeks ago I had bruised bone in my toe. Couldn't walk without a big limp for a few days. I still feel it if I step the wrong way. This one looked worse. Glad it's not broken though.

I love that. Wish more of our ****ing players stood up for one another. Today it would be a 5 game suspension though haha. I still remember, a few years back, I don't recall who it was exactly, may have been Gabby. And how he was getting pummeled right in front of Girardi's face, and G just stood there and looked at it. He got ripped a new one from Torts for not doing anything. This might have been around the time when Brooks called Redden soft, or something and Torts came to his defense about him being the only one standing up for his teammates.

You look at what LA did last year and it gives you hope. I'd rather not be in 8th though. This team cam and will get in. The key though is to get through this next week and half with guys banged up.

We need to stop being compared to LA. They were one of the top puck possessing teams in the league last year. The Rangers are still awful in that regard. Puck possession correlates to success.

Thats an exaggeration. The goal would hardly stand out in any way in such an abysmal performance.

Pretty sure Torts would be busy ripping Gaborik a new one, or Richards, or 15 other guys before Girardi. I'm just not a fan of blocking shots in decided games. If it hits you, great, but don't go out of your way and risk injury for literally no reason.

Unless its boyle we don't match up well with sj who wants a forward. Murray isnt good enough to justify giving up anyone other thsn boyle or picks

Stop blaming Girardi. He gave 60 full minutes of not quitting.. maybe the rest of the team should follow suit
