Visiting WNY over Christmas for the first time in many years and targeting the Dec 23rd game against Phoenix with Mom watching the grandkids down in Jamestown and getting a hotel for my wife and me in Buffalo. So my questions are:

-Would like to be up close to the glass in the end where the Sabres shoot twice. Which section is best? Have never been to FNC. Last home game was nose bleeds at the Aud.

- recommendations for where to stay within cab distance from FNC?

- best activity to spend a few hours before the game with my wife? Which restaurants, what to check out?

- Anywhere to go local after the game?

- Any recommendations for breakfast joints for the next morning?

You do what you want, however I would strongly vote against anything below row 8 or 9. Too close means nasty blind spots. Hard to see plays behind players close to the glass etc...

If you want to be among the game going crowd before the game, Pearl st. Brewery is a fine choice. Also Chef's is a nice place to go.

As far as places to go. Go to Niagara Falls. Go to Albright Knox Art Museum. Go to the developing waterfront within close walking distance to the FNC :dunno:

There's a growing number of hotels in downtown Buffalo that should suit any budget. One of the nice things about Buffalo is that there's a rapid transit line running down Main Street that is free for the above ground sections - along which many of the hotels are near. You just hop on the rapid transit car and head down Main St to the FNC. The hotels are all within a short cab ride of FNC as well.

Top of the line - The Lafayette. The Lafayette in particular is newly renovated - so some online reviews might be out of date. The place is now spectacular. There's an expensive steak house (Mike A's) and a reasonably priced restaurant called the Pan American Grill.

Also Top of the line - The Mansion on Delaware - The Mansion is within walking distance of some really nice restaurants - Tempo, Mothers, Merge, Scarlet, Fat Bobs, La Cantina, Don Tequila, Gabriels Gate and more. You can look them up on the net. Each is very nice in its own right.

Very Nice - Embassy Suites. Located in a newly renovated building called the Avante. Super cool and modern. Has a nice restaurant on premises. Near Chippewa aka the Chip Strip - which is more youthful oriented, occasion. Bacchus Wine Bar and restaurant is first class, though. Papaya too. You can walk there from the hotel. Also near the restaurants mentioned for the Mansion. Mother's has a consistently good menu and a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. I proposed to my then girlfriend there. Fat Bobs is a BBQ joint. Papaya is Pacific Rim. Check 'em out on the net.

Okay - Hyatt. A great old buliding that was converted to a hotel about 20 years ago. Showing its age from what I hear - but I'd stay there. Very good steak house on premises - EB Greens.

Also okay - Adam's Mark. This might be the closest to the arena. Built about 25 years ago. Decent from what I've read. I'd stay there. Walking distance to the arena. Near Pearl St Grill/Brewery

Comfort Suites - Right on Main and the rapid transit line. Has a TGI Fridays on premises. Hey - It's a Comfort Suites. I stay in places like this all the time. They are clean and convenient. And reasonably priced.

Places to go:

Before or after the game - Any one of the restaurants I've mentioned if you want to eat/drink near your hotel. If you want to be part of the game day action I'd suggest Pearl St Grill/Brewery or Lagerhaus 95. Both are within walking distance of the arena and are PACKED on game nights. Near Lagerhaus 95 are Prohibition - which is kind of a dive bar atmosphere - but nice in it's own way and Helium - a comedy club.

Attractions - Alright Knox is a great, world class art museum featuring a great collection of abstract expressionism. But - there really is something for everyone there including a nice impressionist/post impressionist grouping. Right across the street from there is the Burchfield Penney Art Gallery - which has a nice collection of Charles Burchfield art plus lots of other stuff. I'm not a fan of Burchfield myself, but many love his water colors that were painted right in the area. While you're at those museums you could walk over to the Buffalo Psychiatric Center and walk the grounds. It's a beautiful HH Richardson building/complex that is undergoing restoration and re-purposing. Right across the street is Coles - a venerable Buffalo bar where you can grab some pub food.

I'd also strongly consider the Darwin Martin House and complex - a great Frank Lloyd Wright restoration.

If you are not into the cultural stuff like the art gallery or Frank Lloyd Wright - you could head over to the Elmwood village - not far from any of the hotels I mentioned and walk the streets. Plenty of really nice shops and tons of restaurants. Blue Monk comes to mind. It's a great pub/restaurant with lots of great Belgian (and other) beers. There's also Cafe Aroma, Vera Pizzeria, Tapas. Just google any of those to get a general location, drive there, find a parking spot and walk. Always interesting and fun.

For brunch the next morning, all I can think of are Cecilia's on Elmwood - in the Elmwood Village area and The Left Bank - for what many might consider to be the best brunch in Buffalo/ The Left Bank is not far from downtown Buffalo, depending on how you get there, you might have to go through a rather rough neighborhood - but it's worth it. Brunch or not, the Left Bank is one of Buffalo's best restaurants. If you take the right route, you might pass by Kleinhan's Music Hall - an Eilel and Eero Saarinen masterpiece. Eero Saarinen designed the Gateway to the West in St Louis, FWIW. Make a reservation. Hope you have a Garmin (or similar)

This made me miss Buffalo.

I stayed in the Comfort Suites this summer and I was satisfied. Near rapid transit line was a plus.

You're probably right from a quality of hotel standpoint. For whatever reason, I thought the Lafayette was more convenient to the free Metro Rail to FNC. Edited for The Mansion in above post

The mansion has a Land Rover which will drive you anywhere downtown. I know this personally because I've used it and my now-ex-wife used to work there as well.

Any tips on how to get back to Toronto after a Bills game without having to rent a car? Going to the game this Sunday and have a flight out of Toronto early Monday morning. I saw there's a Greyhound bus that leaves Buffalo around 6pm. Is it easy to catch this (ie. taking a cab or bus from the stadium)?

Thank you sir. St-Pierre/Hendricks is that weekend. U know how quick of a drive it'll be sunday morning from the adam marks to ralph wilson..?

Pretty quick actually...depending on when you go, 15-20 minutes.

190 to 90 to 219 ... can get off at 20A exit or Mile Strip Rd.

I went down to the game tonight....some things to note.....

I took the subway down to the stadium. Because of construction on the harbor center it has walled off some pathways.

I recall the last time they stopped closer to the Arena. They are a little farther awy, maybe a block farther down. You cant cross over to the main entrance door because of the construction site. You can only enter at the door near the Sabres store if you want to get to or from the subway line in the easiest way.

The police were out in force at University Station checking to see if you have a paid ticket both coming and going.

As far as I know there is no bus line that would take you from Orchard Park to Buffalo transit center for a bus to canada.

There may be a bus company that does transportation to/from a Bills game to Toronto. Then the bus parks at the stadium.

Sorry if this has been answered in the first 17 pages, but I am not going to read through all of that from the last 6 years...

What's the best strategy for parking? I'm driving 3 hours for the Avs game Saturday. I've been to Buffalo a few times in the past but rode with friends who had free suite tickets as well as parking passes. I'm mainly asking because I know they are building the Harbor Center or whatever it is called and didn't know how that effects parking.

I'm planning on arriving about an hour before the game to walk around the concourse check out the souvenir shop and watch warm ups. Should I just spend the $15 and park in one of the three parking lots that the Sabres advertise on their website for parking?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I just pay the $15. It's an easy exit after the game. within 20 minutes of exiting you'll be be back on the highway.

I was literally just about to quote his post and type out the same reply :tear:

Awesome writeup, BandGForever.

Edit- to add a bit of substance, while left bank is my favorite restaurant of all time and their brunch is impossibly good, Coles has all you drink mimosas, and the food is pretty decent. Just thought I'd throw that out there ;)

Looking at tickets to an upcoming game. My friends are large guys (6'4 220lbs+) and we're looking at tickets in the Harbor Club Boxes and the 100 level centre ice. How do the seats, views and experiences compare? Given your druthers, where would you sit? The Harbor Club seats are behind the Buffalo net twice. Thanks for the info.

The Harbor club boxes are actually tables for 4. They're pretty nice. you'll get waiter service for food and beverage and not be crammed in at all. Center ice a slightly better view. But, I kind of like being behind the net.

I'd take the box if it was me.

My dad and I are flying to Buffalo on Nov 2nd for the Sabres vs Ducks game (and Bills vs Chiefs the next day). I'm looking for a suggestion on a good bar/restaraunt to watch the Blackhawks vs Ducks game at 3pm. It's on both NHL Network and the CBC would love to stay near the arena.

I see Pearl St Brewery recommended. Do they show out of town games?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

(Apologies if this has been covered in a recent post but I'm on my cellphone and it's a pain to read back through things.)

You confused me---the game you are referencing is Blackhawks at Jets on CBC.

The bar should air it, though you may have to ask. they likely will oblige because (1) Kane is from Buffalo so there is a number of people who follow the Hawks, (2) they know many of the people in there then are hockey fans so they will likely air an available game.

D'oh. Yeah. Hawks vs Jets. Dumb.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Hoping to make the trip out to Buffalo for the game against the Ducks a week from yesterday. Any information on when/where the visiting players enter and if that's open to the public? Was hoping to see if I could get an autograph from Selanne and this is more than likely the last time I will have the chance. Excited to watch my first game in Buffalo!

I plan to go to the games on Sunday 24th (Red Wings game)

Any advice on seats? (I have never been to a live game before)
There are almost none in the official site but I see tons of ticket on Stubhub.

Is 100 level much better than the 300 ones?
Do people prefer 100 level on the goalie side over 300 level center ice?
Any particulate section I should avoid?

Should I wait until the day before for cheaper ticket?
How much did you pay for certain section?
Should I buy the instant download tickets or electronic ones?

I would prefer to pay less than $100 per ticket.

I am planning to drive from Toronto to Buffalo (using the south bridge - Fort something) park at the rink ($13 Columbia st.) than drive back.

How early do the gates open? I would like to see pre-game skates as well.

I know most of these questions were probably answered already but I didn't want to read all the replys.

Thanks in advance.

Like I told someone earlier, IMO, the real close seats are a waste of money anything below row 7 or 8. Too many blind spots, hard time seeing plays over other players closer to you, sometimes higher price, etc...

The corners are alright if you like that kind of view. Half the action is close, half the action is far :dunno:

I've always preferred center ice seats. Since this is your first time, save a little money and just buy center ice 300's. You'll see the plays develop beautifully. Even with the 300's you're not that far away from the action IMO. Because the Sabres are doing poorly, you could go on Craigslist, or even buy from Scalpers a block away from the arena for a good price.

If you buy from Stubhub, the box office, or other ticket websites, you'll get wacked with a service and handling fee. Somewhere around $6-10 per ticket. I honestly think you could get center ice 300's for $30-$40 per ticket. Maybe even less.

Oh and as for parking, park under One HSBC Center or One Seneca Tower (google it) on Washington st. It's $8 and literally a 5 minute walk to the arena. Your car is out of any elements like snow or rain. I always park there.
