The answer is tied to profitability and then in turn franchise value when discussing ownership motivation to run a fortune 500 company.

Corporate Ticket Holders

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the most expensive team to follow, mostly because their games are the most popular. While annual hikes in ticket prices aren’t anything unusual for sports teams, the Maple Leafs have been increasing by around 15% annually for several years. This is partially due to the popularity of the team, but also the fact that a majority of Scotiabank Arena’s seats are reserved for season ticket holders, including corporations.

Forbes Fortune 500 highest valued franchises 2022

1. New York Rangers
• Value: $2 billion

• One-Year Change: 21%
• Five-Year Change: 60%
• Owner: Madison Square Garden Sports

2. Toronto Maple Leafs
• Value: $1.8 billion

• One-Year Change: 20%
• Five-Year Change: 64%
• Owner: Bell Canada, Rogers Communications, Larry Tanenbaum

So for Leaf Nation fans "incompetence" is the response because its all comes down to winning in the playoffs, because there is no Financial benefit..

However to Ownership having expensive players on the ice allows them to charge and validate the price of admission by charging the highest ticket prices as well as sponsor, donors, investors and advertisers etc. That in turn fuels franchise value which places Leafs #2 and approaching $2 billion on franchise value. Making the playoffs guarantees putting a good team for entertainment purposes on the ice and so winning a few playoff rounds might bring the profitability up by millions but that pales in the franchise value in the billions. Due the high regular season ticket prices it more than makes up financially for not winning in the playoffs.

So Fans and Ownership are on a different pages when it comes what motivates them and what appears to be indifference by not changing losing management, is more about showing stability and about profitability as opposed to team playoffs success which fans call incompetence.
If Leafs the Cup, the value could be 200mil more, and if they won back to back it could be 500mil. won’t that make the ownership wants to win.

There is no doubt ownership is happy with what the Leafs are bringing in but just making the playoffs are like hitting singles, they want home runs which is the Cup. Anyone in finance would take a homerun over single every time esp since if the money being spent is about the same due to the salary cap.

The intent of thread was pretty well explained in the opening post. Perhaps you two should actually read it and apply some comprehension. It was neither complaining nor a "dumb" topic of discussion.

Unless of course you have actually been deluded into thinking this organization has been successful in the past two decades, in which case, carry on, sorry to have woken you.

no its f$%#$en stupid ........
get off your high horse and stop believing this stupid argument "if fans show up why would a team bother trying to win"

its really stupid , what are you 12 ?

That may be true but if the atmosphere for success can not be established due to the abundance of wealth., I would run the Leafs like a miser. I mean, I would spend to the cap but have a very lean organization as far as management goes. Just the best and not too many extra voices creating noise. I think that's the a big issue over there as well.

Yea, I suspected you didn't understand the premise of the original post. Enjoy the game today.

I don’t buy that the suits don’t want to win.
Winning means revenue.
Quite frankly the Suits have given all they can to provide the Leafs to win. They are paying a coach 5-6mil to sit at home and do nothing. Pretty sure if McD is available, they will open the cheque book to sign him. It is not like the suits are nickel and diming the team in spending.
Now did they choose the right person for the job to run the team is another story.

I don’t think it’s that they don’t want to win, but they aren’t hurting if the team doesn’t win and that’s the biggest issue. There isn’t a desperation for the team to win from ownership. It’s just contentment because at the end of the day they are bringing in so much money, winning a championship is just a bonus. I think they would definitely like to see the leafs win again very soon. But not winning doesn’t hurt their bottom line like it would other organizations so it’s probably #2 priority behind keeping the valuation up and making huge profits year after year.
