I do agree CB isn't exactly priority number 1 as far as devoting assets to it is concerned. That said, adding a young and talented player is always a big plus. As long as the other needs are addressed I'll be happy.

We do need depth at D. And if it's a young player who can challenge whoever is in place for a starting spot, it can only be a good thing. Would I ratrher we use that intl spot elswhere? Yes. I'm really concerned about centre mid, that's where the team is the thinest.

While everyone seems to be focussed on a new striker or #10, our problem has never been creating chances/scoring goals, and we've added a few offensive players in the offseason. We have only 3 that we know are starting quality cm's / cdm's. This really worries me.

I really dont see which domestic player could be the quality CM we need, other than Atiba, and he's just signed another renewal with Besiktas.

And to defend AJH, Dax is a beast on headers/corners despite his small statutre, I'm sure he's scored more headers than with both legs over the last 5 years.

Yeah, but in this case AJH didnt even try. He watched the ball and didnt follow his man.

Our CMs/cDMs are Donadel, Piette and Taider, then you have Shome and LBG (maybe Krolicki or Bahiya)

That's more depth than CBs, I also believe we need someone between them and the attackers, a #10

Totally forgot he existed, guess Krolicki took over in the depth chart. LBG isn't MLS caliber anyway.

Not if we play a 4141. Imo you're better with 2 #8. And from what i'm hearing Garde say, we seem to agree on that.
3 starters at centre mid is not enough, especially when 2/3 are #6's.

edit: sorry, i meant a 4141 or a 433.

Nguyen is pretty much "Win"

And sometimes "wen".
I honestly thought most people knew this. I grew up in the backwaters and I still feel its very common, on tv and all. Guess i was wrong. It's ok, but I'd research someones name before butchering it on a podcast when I wasnt sure how to pronounce it.

TransferMarkt actually had 4141 as preferred formation for Garde

Yeah, and I thought we looked pretty good playing it against Chicago. I was surprised by how cohesive we were already. Our first half lineup was only missing an upgrade to Shome (though i really like the kid and hope he gets opportunities this season).

Btw, I was gonna check out Nehuen Paz getting destroyed by Lautaro Martinez this afternoon as Racing Cub were playing against Lanus... turns out Nehuen Paz has yet to feature for Lanus since being loaned there, he isnt even a sub.

It looks like Garde is in process of giving Vargas a little bit of a humility lesson. He said he botched his off-season preparation and had a little muscle injury because of it. I have no doubt Vargas will adjust accordingly and this will be a thing of the past.

I LOVE the transparency in Garde's comments. I also like how, whom unlike Biello, this coach finds and openly discusses flaws in great performances. He said the Impact haven't spent anytime working on set-pieces and that's why they got scored on. It'll change very soon thought.

I remember when we faced AS Roma in a friendly, structuly we looked like complete amateurs compared to their midfield and especially their back line. You could laser point that back line, that's how those defenders complemented each other. I have a feeling that on many match-ups, that's what other teams will look like compared to us.

Just get that damn striker and we can start without any obvious weak points.

To be fair, us québécois are usually quite sensible when it comes to the proper pronounciation. See Pierre Houde or Fred Lord. Especially compared to our north american neighbours. It's probably because we cringe every time our names are butchered. I went to school with a lad who was named Nguyen and he never once complained how we said his last name.

Garde is used to get criticized by Lyon Fans/reporters. Handling the Montréal coverage must be a walk in the park for him. I think his transparency is also cultural. It's a cliché, but the French are really critical of the institutions and the scrutiny over there is on a whole other level, despite the great quality of services compared to pretty much anywhere else in the world. During our Summer conferences in Franco-Euro countries, I was astonished by the willingness to accept critics and answer the bell/questions. Criticism is much more welcomed over there than in Québec, where consensus is everything.

During one of our conferences, I challenged the CEO of a French Pension fund directly by criticizing their way of identifying good corporate citizens (long story short they used a private firm that would evaluate companies for them instead of doing the analysis themselves) and he acknowledged that it was indeed a weakness with their process. During their whole presentation you could tell they had to answer much harsher critics/opposition than what a similar public pension fund would here in Canada.

I think football culture in general is more transparent and straight forward, that's one of the things I love the most. Garde comes out last week and says he still needs a cb, another box to box and a fwd, which is also in tune with the fan base on top of that.

It's much easier for fans, in the age of information, to know how your team sees it, rather than have this secret plan and have it fall apart without concrete things to answer to.
