JG created exactly that by trading away the entire roster, a loser mentality..
Do you see these pre/post game player interviews?
They're all a bunch of sad sacks.
The life has been sucked right out of the locker room.
It's horrible..
The life hasn’t been there for two years, that’s why the coach is gone.
Gorton traded players of value for a haul to shape what will the foundation the team in a few years. The way most of the team played after the deadline showed was more than what they showed for most of the year before that. It’s one thing if they’re a bad team and bottom out, but they’re never going to go out and intentionally lose games because that’s where all the problems start.

Maybe but I wouldn't want that either. I'm talking like a 3 or 4 million dollar player that can play minutes that way we don't have so many ahl players in the starting lineup. Defense is definitely the team's weakness.
No problem with a cheap Holden-style bottom pair guy, but I think that next tier up should be off limits with so much money already committed to Shattenkirk, Smith and Staal. Unless we trade Shatty or buy out one of the other two it's just too much.

According the logic in here we shouldn't be concerned with Staal's contract because it expires in three years so who cares anyway...

I get it. Hell, we all get it.

The only thing worse would be keeping the old gang together...and SLOWLY watching the suck sink in.

I saw so many games this year where they came out dead flat. Unprepared. Unmotivated. Sucky.

You just knew it was time.

Just me, but I think to get past that you have to rip it all apart. Start over. Part of that is watching a team struggle as it creates a new identity.

Ready to turn the page and move the hell on.

I’m excited about what this team is about to go through. This is going to be fun.

Were rebuilding but were signing a 35 year old to a two year deal? I dont know how to feel on this
I'm with you, just seems this has a LOT of "behind the scenes" kind of stuff involved in it. Call it political or whatever, call it simply a "value addition", meaning we will eventually get a draft pick somewhere down the line for him.
He may even lead us towards the Stanley Cup......who freakin' knows?

Give him the 6 million but at 2 years please. I'm sure he wants to sign with NY because he wants to live in this area. Gorton knows that so he can use as leverage regarding term. One thing that could happen is IK may ask for some kind of a NMC.
Eerily similar to MSL. IMO, if a player wants so badly to play for the Rangers, they should take a HUGE discount, and even then we should think twice. They don't get to call the shots, the Rangers "should". Didn't Drury and Gomez WANT to play for the Rangers? MSL certainly did, Shatty the same. Now Kovy.
Call me envious. They get to have their cake and eat it too?

2 years 6 per sure if he brings Gusev with him next year plus the kids Sherts makes Rykov

Makes sense they are going quick build w Russians around Buch and namestnikov

Remember how lively Zuke and Kreider used to be?
They've matured. Jumping out of a pool used to be fun, while molesting mere mortal on the ice, (before the league and AV castrated him) and bowling with Brass & Hags used to be fun. How could playing hockey for millions of dollars be fun without that?

Knowing he isn't coming over to play for LV it seems, would the Rangers trade something small for his rights and see if he would come over with Kovalchuk?

Pretty sure like Radulov and the preds next year Gusev is a ufa . So one more khl year

I just KNOW I'm gonna have to change my avatar. Will cry.

Maybe it will be quiet without Zucc chants in MSG, but perhaps it`s time for him to move on to next franchise. I`m still not too certain how much he would enjoy the whole rebuild process with our current defense core. :)

But the 3 year 6 million to a 35+ that hasn't played in the NHL in 5 years sounds like a better idea?

I don't think Gorton will give him more than 2 years. At 2 years, there isn't a lot of risk. We are rebuilding. It's going to take 2 years or more for the kids to mature, so if Kovy sucks, he will suck when we aren't in our window to compete and then he will be gone.

The cap commitment isn't a big deal either because we'll likely bring in Kovy and trade Zucc. Again, we aren't going all in to win here in the next 2 years. If Kovy gets 6 mil, that's only a net increase of 1.5 mil. It won't significantly impact our ability to make other moves.

Tavares is going to get 10 mil a year or more for 7 or 8 years depending on where he signs and if the islanders trade his rights. You don't sign a player like that now because you're expecting to compete 3 or 4 years from now. By the time we are ready to compete again, he might be in decline. There will be other players, other opportunities, where it makes more sense for the Rangers. If we had started the rebuild 3 years ago and were now seeing the fruits of that labor, signing Tavares would make sense. Signing him at the beginning of the rebuild doesn't. We want his best years to coincide with our best chance to win and that's not going to happen. The timing isn't right.

Yes it does. First of all, you’re making an assumption on the term. McKenzie has written that Gorton is not willing to go past two years. Second, Kovalchuk at $6 million per even in the 3rd year is still not as much of an anchor on the cap as Tavares would be at $10 million per in years 4-7, when all of the young talent begins their next contracts. Kovalchuk for the next two years, when there is plenty of space and cheap young talent and the Rangers shouldn’t have many big ticket players is not a big problem.

That’s a fair point. I suppose people mature differently. I’m certainly different at 30 than I was at 23, but I like to think that my demeanor didn’t go from lively to quasi-dead.
