Ok.

We need that top 3 draft pick talent to win that big tall silver thing.

A decision to sign Kovy sounds as if RangersTown™ isn't top concerned with that, so I'm thinking about the next 20-50 years.

Think of it as if you were. Rangers fan in 1948 or whatever.
You’re making a pretty big jump there

Can someone explain to me the downside I seem to be missing?

The downside for me - and this is of course just my opinion and not fact, is I don't see him being all that thrilled playing on a rebuilding team. I'm sure he'll be fine to start out having roughly 6 million reasons to be fine, but by the middle of the season when he realizes he's on a **** team playing essentially meaningless games, I can see him being not so thrilled and wanting out.

Maybe we can trade him or maybe he "retires" again and we're stuck with his cap hit for the length of his contract. Probably won't happen and maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill because I don't like over 35 contracts on sheer principle, but for me, that's the downside.

The Rangers have already restocked the cupboard starting last offseason. They turned Stepan into two players. They turned Mac into 3-4 depending on how the draft goes and how you think that trade went down in terms of value. They turned Nash into 2-3 players, not counting Spooner and the other two cones. Grabner into 1-2 players. So in essence, if they keep all of their picks, they have received 11 prospects for 4 players. That number could go up if they flip Zucc or Spooner at the draft. Gorton is not providing some half ass rebuild. He has restocked the system well. They dont need to continue to sell of assets and tank. They can build off what they have as they have better people in management than other franchises do imo. No harm in adding Kovalchuk for just money.

Yeah, so, unfortunately its just not about restocking the cupboard. Its about doing it with quality goods - and we are a long ways away from seeing if thats the case or not.

Im on the fence about signing Kovalchuk, but it does confirm that an adequate amount of patience won't be on the table if the Rangers are itching to get into this signing.

I will not believe this until confirmed.

It doesn’t mesh with the rest of the rebuild at all.

Fools gold here

Same here.

I also have zero clue while Kovalchuk would want to come back to a high tax state/area with little chance to contend for a cup over the next 2 years. It just doesn't add up.

Well, just because you're rebuilding doesn't mean that a) you don't have anyone over 30 on your team and b) you don't want to have assets you can move for younger assets at the deadline. If Kovy can be a mentor, particularly to our young Russians, and bring us back a couple picks or prospects at the deadline a year or two from now, what's not to like? As long as he does not have a NMC I'm fine with it. The cash doesn't matter.

Carp says it's not true as the two sides can't even talk right now and kovy can't sign until july 1st

That said, I could see rumors on the Russian side of things that Kovy wants to sign with the Rangers and that's being assumed to "will sign with the Rangers for *this deal*". Wouldn't be surpirsed if there's mutual interest, even Brooks was pushing it, though who knows if he had info or just spinning his own opinions.

I don't believe it because I don't think anything has or can even be agreed upon up to this point, but it doesn't f*** with the rebuild at all.

This isn't the same as signing Tavares for 7/77. That would f*** with the rebuild.

It’s a rebuild.
One more thing: both Chytil and Andersson need help with their shooting and stickhandling (and Andersson with his skating as well). So I can see Kovalchuk both creating space for them on the ice as well as Gravy and other player development guys directing Kovalchuk to help them out during training sessions.

I don´t think Kovalchuk will necessarily help Buch all that much. Both are kind of introverted, they play different styles and they only played together nominally (as Buch got the 4th line treatment back in SKA as well). I guess theoretically he could help with Igor and Yegor coming over, but I don´t know about that.

Oh ffs no mind reading pls.

Kovalchuk has made how many tens of millions (if not more) in his hockey career? If he really wants to play in NYC I doubt that losing a couple extra million over the length of the contract is going to be a deal-breaker for him. And for all those that say this doesn't jibe with the rebuild--it might not jibe with your idea of what a rebuild entails, but that doesn't mean Gorton feels the same way. We'll see, I guess.

It jives perfectly with the same shit going on in RangersTown™️ Since the Korean War.

I'm not arguing against signing him to a short term deal, just the ridiculous notion that signing him signals that the rebuild is over and we are going to go all in to win next year.
Are you saying you're against the idea that this would signify an end, or that you're just against signing him? Sorry.

I don't think the punishment of him retiring midway through a contract is that severe. The Rangers would be in the same position as Detroit with Datsyuk and you could argue they got Arizona to pay a premium for the right to take on that dead capfloor hit.
