Why is that?

SKA wanted to give him every chance to be ready and / or prove that he's true #1 for this team. Not sure if he accomplished this. Taking the whole season, Shesterkin should be the starting goalie but they could choose to go with more experienced Koskinen.

Yup, Costoco got the job and couldn't lose it no matter what. I don't think The Czar got any chance. He did everything one could've asked for. He was dominant for long stretches when he was allowed to actually play regularly. He became a KHL All Star. He put up far better numbers than Costco for the SKA. He beat Costco in the Euro tour just now. Yet, he's the backup. WTF.

Same reason Girardi is starting.

It's worse than that. Imagine we had Erik Karlsson and AV went, "eh, screw it, Girardi has more experience, Karlsson is getting benched. We'll use him when Girardi is injured long-term. Until then, he's watching the game in a suit from upstairs."

Well I don't follow this team nor the KHL of course, but just looking at the team stats on hockeydb.com - Shestyorkin has played 16 more games, has a better win % and has the better save % and goals against average among the two goaltenders... Seems like a no brainer which goaltender should be considered the #1...

:dunno:

Don't really like that comparison. It's imo more like if Pens would play Fleury in the upcoming playoffs over Murray. Koskinen isn't awful by any means and he's won it for them before, Shestyorkin is definitely the better goalie and should play but coach is a true old schooler who will 'always' go with experience first.

Weird. Definitely sounds like they're banking on the more experienced thing. What's Koskinen's contract status?

I know this is speculation but is it possible that Igor talked to management about possibly getting either out of his contract to come over to New York earlier or perhaps they talked about his future and Shesterkin simply expressed that he will want to play for the Rangers soon and this is their way of going with their current/future number 1 rather than "waste time with Igor"?

I mean it's possible but I don't think there's any point in speculating too hard about it since there's no evidence that has happened. The most simple explanation is just that the coach wants to go with experience in the playoffs.

It's also possible that he got a groin injury molesting Putin's dog, but unless we have at least some evidence, it means nothing to ask if something is possible. Space aliens are also possible.

Not sure if I'm "speculating hard" here, I'm just throwing out a theory that may explain a puzzling situation.
Until we hear it from the horses mouth... yada, yada, yada.

I apologize, I thought this was a discussion board where discussions are welcomed and encouraged. Won't make that mistake again.

Asking if something is possible will obviously get a yes answer because anything is possible. It's possible Shesterkin is a space alien. It's possible Shesterkin was the Russian who hacked our elections. It's possible Shesterkin is part of the ISIS sleeper cell on a long-term plan to get drafted, infiltrate the Garden and blow it up. It's all possible. It's just not "reasonably plausible." Likewise, your statement is not reasonably plausible given that it has nothing to back it. Your statement is as likely as the idea of Shesterkin being an ISIS sleeper cell bomber.

Right, once again. I apologize for not passing your litmus test. I will consult you next time I will take part in any sort of discussion on a discussion board.

I'm amazed by the welcoming and non-hostile nature of your posts. I'll muster my future posts after your schematics.

His statement is absolutely "reasonably plausible." Plausibility requires only the application of solid logic. It does not require evidence.

Don't apologize didn't do anything wrong. Beacon will speculate plenty in this thread and make ridiculous comments like how shesterkin who's 20 mind you and not even a khl starter would be ready for NHL starting duties right now. He wouldn't be

Do your thing welcome to the board

Apologies for not being up to date but how quickly would we want Shestyorkin over here anyway?

Hank has what, 4 or 5 years left on his contract? What if another expansion team crops up and we would have to expose Shestyorkin if he was on the roster as a backup? I think I'd rather him stay over there in the KHL for a couple more years until Hank is closer to being done.

With Las Vegas joining NHL will be at 31 teams.... can't imagine they won't want to add #32 before too long.

You trade him for a kings ransom. Probably a young defenseman at that time. Defense is aging on the Rangers.

Rangers have done excellent in trades for a while now.

I want him here right now. Lundqvist is now at the age when goalies can suddenly get much worse very quickly or get a serious injury. I would like Shesterkin to practice under Benny for a while before he takes over the #1 spot. He's ready to be an NHL backup, probably a very good one. If he could play next year as a backup, then the following year (when Lundqvist turns 37 midway through the season), if something happens to Hank, Shesterkin should be ready to go. Everyone thinks Shesterkin's contract is perfect because it alows him to come over at the end of Hank's career, assuming he lasts as long as Brodeur. But Brodeur is one of the longest-ever lasting goalies. Nothing says Lunqvist can still play healthy and at the top of his game next year, much less 2 years from now.

That said, if Shesterkin can't get out of his contract, nothing we can do. But if he can, they should get him here next season.
