Without the players of that era fighting tooth and nail for the Cup every season, today's guys wouldn't have the privilege of making an obscene amount of money playing a game.

And that money is the incentive that drives competition to be the most well-honed athlete possible. Obviously players today are bigger, faster, and more skilled on average, with so much more at stake.

But there's a way to talk about it without shitting on the history of the sport.

Of course, I just think sometimes fans go too far the other way and put old players on a pedestal. The game is so much more advanced today. I’m legitimately better at pretty much every aspect of hockey than most NHL players pre 1970s. Watching them is straight up comical.

If Ovi and Matthews were out there ripping shots on Plante the dude would let up so many goals, come on. How dynamic these shooters are today is not getting enough cred.

I always find these hypotheticals to be incredibly one sided, thus always favoring the modern players. If you gave Gretzky a pair of modern day skates with the technology, nutrition and workout equipment guys today have, he may still be the best player today. Matthews back in time is wearing the same equipment as back then, no protein shakes or any of that cool stuff either.

While elite goalies don’t typically determine the outcome of a playoff series mostly.

Shesterkin is good enough to do so… But we definitely need a few holes to fill.

if we can some how make a JT Miller trade for Chytil, Kravstov, Nils, 1st. Trade a 3rd and a prospect for Max Domi, and run out…

We can win a cup. Additions like Miller and Domi would make this team EXTREMELY hard to play against, as well as our talent on the top lines, our defense being young, but capable. Then having a goalie who is having a goat type season is a recipe for success.

We don’t need any more skill type player. We need to add players that will make us deeper, and tougher to play against to wear the opposing team out. But at the same time this team is extremely skilled.

That team will give a run if we were to meet the Avs in the SCF. Their goaltending is weak so I think we’d have the advantage.

The players back then stumbled in drunk and smoked in between periods. Most "stars" of those eras wouldn't even crack the 4th line of an NHL team today. They are just far superior athletes today.

It’s good, it’s not really anything special though. Vezina winners are usually around like close to .930. .917 is good for 15th in the league right now, which is pretty much just an average starter

.920 is the “this is a good goalie” tier. .930 is “this is an elite season”. .940 is on another planet.

Igor could let in 14 of the next 14 shots against him and still lead the league on save%

Holtby went 48-9-7 in 2016 which he had a .922 save percentage. He won the Vezina and finished 4th in Hart voting. He finished 10th in Hart voting and lost the Vezina to Bob the following season, despite his base goalie stats improving, seemingly only because his win loss record went down.

Shesty, if he hits 40 wins, would only be the second goalie to do so in less than 60 games. Ken Dryden did it in 1977 in the midst of winning 4 straight Vezinas and 4 straight stanley cups.

I watched him a lot that season because it was a debate whether his stats would vault him over Henrik for Vezina that year. In the end only one writer voted for Elliot though they gave him a first place vote.

That season, along with others closeby, were an era where St. Louis was just so stifling defensively that the goalies all thrived. It was not uncommon to open a box score of a Blues game on any given day and seeing only 14-16 shots against on the regular. Hitchcock came in and decided the best way to win games with his roster was to clog the ice, and it worked.

I understand negotiations go both ways, and perhaps his party pushed for just those years; I also understand his limited games started in the NHL up until this season. But he has put up absolutely mythical numbers at every single level, and right out of the gate showed he could play at this level (staying on the ice, however, a different story).

But he is looking at a MASSIVE raise in three years when his contract is up.

I was thinking it would go at least five to match Panarin's contract--and would've preferred six.

As you said, it's a two-way street. Maybe Igor and his team pushed for those years, but then Rangers said they'd only pay him that amount for it.

I completely agree with you...really wanted a 5th year. However, he still had a relatively small sample size, with so-so numbers in his first "full" season. And, with the team tight against the cap perhaps they weren't comfortable with the additional cost.

I don't think we talk enough about Benoit Allaire. Other fans are sitting here jealous of our supposed draft luck in getting Hank in the 7th and Shesty in the late 4th (not to mention signing Cam Talbot when he was still in the A), but clearly they have specific traits that Allaire values and knows that he can maximize to get the best performance. Allaire's been with the org for 17 years, and if there's anyone whose brain should be uploaded onto a hard drive so that they can remain with us after they die, I vote him.

Anti Raanta also played well for us.

It's hard to talk about the coach, because we don't really know what he's doing. But whatever it is, it's working really well.
