I wouldn't totally bank on this, even though its the most likely scenario.

If the Sharks landed Tavares say, and really got up against the cap, I'm not sure Thornton wouldn't be tempted to go to another contender (ex. leafs) for say 6mil which is maybe double or triple than what SJ could have given him. That's probably the only scenario that he's not a Shark next yr.
Nah nah nah mayne. Having followed the sharks their whole existance I know it all. DW already said he wants Joe back and Joe promised to play for cheap. So they talking like he will play this last year after the injured wacky one like 3mil per the last year son. So joe already got his moneys. He just wants to be with friends and end it. In san jose. And have a chance at the cup. They do it all. And have that chance. And they even will sign the Joe tavares on that thang too. They getting everything and everybody. Joe T and John T. Every JT there is. Bank on it mayne. I know this and they written it down already. If we don't get tavares, they will. Doug Wilson does it like that. Big Joe will play his final season after the injury one for 3 million dollars. They don't want money. He already there. And stay there, he don't want no toronto money. He staying san jose. They written it down man.

I wouldn't be averse, but if we want retention, and we do (RoR is overpaid by about 1.5 million), you know Buffalo will want the first and one of Liljegren or Dermott.

A within the division trade to a rival who is Dead Sea salty over our quick turnaround, the first and a package of lesser assets (Bracco, Timashov, Brown etc.,) isn't going to play.

I sooner throw 10 at Tavares, and nudge nudge, wink wink, the implication of maybe an extra 2-3 a year in endorsements.

For 7.5m you can get a pretty good UFA (maybe not this year) without giving up any assets. Leafs aren't that desperate at centre to swing a deal for ROR compared for some other teams. Nylander still an option,

How about no.

Last two seasons

How about we keep our 4.5M center and move Nylander to the middle. Let the Sabres and Iles/whoever pay these guys 7.5M and ~10M per season to be less efficient scorers than Nazem Kadri.

7.5m might be more than most people think he is worth, but if you believe he'll keep up 60ish 2-way points for his entire contract duration I would be happy to add him. However, I don't want to give up significant assets for him. With the cap going up 5m this year and probably continuing to go up the next few years (especially if Seattle joins 19-20/20-21) pretty much all elite players are going to start getting the 10m+ contracts and I think his contract will end up being the average for his skillset soon (also we should be able to afford his contract plus the young 3 and look to add in the coming years still).

If it costs anything significant though, it's not worth the assets plus his contract. If we are making any trades with significant assets leaving the Leafs, it HAS to be for a top 4 defender.

That's the thing, he may be worth that contract but not the assets we give up. I really like him as a player, we do have cap space that a lot of teams don't, so that is where my intrigue would lie, but it's the cost beyond the cash.

wrong.kadri is just as good, babcock has him turned around, thirty goal shutdown center making 4.5. untouchable imo

I would really like to have both. Last year they could have offered JVR, Boz and a 1st. This year they don't have the right assets. A late 1st + Kapi won't come close. Wouldn't move their two top young D and AJ is the cheap JVR replacement so I don't see a core asset from the Leafs side as they have a few slots to fill assuming the UFAs all walk. Too bad because he doesn't have a contract running into his declining years.

Tavares would be great cause he only costs $.
Nothing against ROR, we shouldn't be trading quality assets for a centre.

No problems here with Matthews/Kadri as our 1/2 punch.
Could address 3rd line centre in free agency.

He was back in his Av days. When Kadri looked like a bust. Either way ROR is sick of Buffalo and Eichel has even said he's sick of losing (but they'd never ever trade him). The leafs will get a center esp if Bozak walks which is likely..its a matter of who and when.

Could be Jumbo Joe cheap because his knees are shot and I dont see SJ giving him a contract. His chemistry with Marleau is undeniable but he has to stay healthy to have that so hard to say...big risk big reward
Kadri never looked like a bust. I would not want Ryan on the Leafs as he is a me first player and not required for us.

Not sure what team you're watching before Babcock everyone was saying he was a bust. He kept going up and down wasn't scoring nothing. Two years under Babs and he is a far better player

Who was everyone ? You and a few people on here who know nothing. A 50 pt center is not a bust..

He joined the NHL for good as a 20 year old and produced 44pts in 48 games.

He was never a bust and calling him one is laughable and simply wrong.
