I think Islanders are the dark horse of the East this season.

If the Isles had a New Jersey-like start, I'd understand the I told you so-ing. They're off to a good start, but that translates to just 1 point from 9th in P% with a GIH. A bad week and they're sitting outside of the playoffs.

They are a bubble team that with defense, goaltending and depth are setup to outperform their regular season numbers in the playoffs. If they took out one of the clear top 5 teams (NJ, BOS, CAR, TOR, TB) in the first round I wouldn’t blink an eye. If they went further than that, I would be shocked.

He's been "fine". Sticks out to block passing lanes is still a huge thing but the defense pinches more, plays more man to man and gives up more odd man rushes because of it. Not sure if the personnel is right for this system but Pulock, Pelech, Dobson and Mayfield seem to be adjusting well, though the first 10-15 games Pelech in particular looked awful. Romanov is having some adjustment pains but Aho has become a legitimate d-man, though small and in the 6th spot. Dobson seems to be more active but he's having problems defensively.

Offensively it's the same team, led by Barzal and Nelson with the occasional bursts of goal-scoring from Lee and Wahlstrom. Pageau's line being effective is huge for the team. Fourth line has been much better than they were last year but they're always an injury away from being out of sorts.

I hate the small box PK but that was a Trotz thing. Started off awesomely but had a brutal stretch the last 10 games or so. PP seems a little more effective but it was "coming around" the second half of last season.

Guess I would grade him a B or B-.

Thankfully Sorokin and Varlamov have held the fort during the first 30 games but they're going to need to clean up defensively if they're going to make the playoffs.

A goal-scoring wing would be great, though we've been saying this since the 2018 offseason...

Just what I was looking for. No sugarcoating anything, just a rational fans view on the team, great insight man, thank you.

Not Boston likely and they lose to Tampa in 5 or 6

The other three they could beat for varying reasons

Tampa is in the isles head like Boston is in Torontos

Can't discount that

Yup. I had them fighting for a spot if things went well. So far, that’s about right.

I think most rational Isles fans thought this as well. Good playoff-built team that isn't a sure playoff team.

Big stretch coming up against really good teams. They did well the first time they ran the gauntlet but they might be down Pelech which doesn't bode well.

They’re too slow and don’t have a bonafide goal scorer, I’m sure Lou will trade more futures away to try and fix it though

My thoughts exactly.
yeah I think that sums it up pretty well honestly. They have some good pieces, a great goalie, but the depth and overall play isn't enough to be a real threat barring a miracle run where everything just goes right for them. I think a guy like Wahlstrom needed to break out more for them than he has, Barzal feels like their only "real" threat out there
They're not bad, and still play a pretty good defensive and structured game, but they have the feeling of a bubble team that needs more skill but can punch above their weight for a bit on the back of their goalie and defensive play

They are just a hard working team that can be physical and can be a tough out if they get the no whistle playoffs to the interference they play to slow the opposition. But if they get a series where the calls are made as to the constant interference the PP is hard for them to overcome with their limited scoring.

Yeah but I wrote this two weeks ago lol. The defense has been abysmal and Lambert hasn't really adjusted anything. Injuries have only proven our lack of depth but as much as I'd like to it's no excuse.

Solid win tonight vs the Panthers after not being able to hold on vs the Rangers last night.

Islanders are the most overrated team in the last 5 years, this team has never had a real chance of doing anything at all with their zero offense built team and they never will. Just because you have God tier goaltending/d doesnt mean it ll be enough and we've seen it isn't.

However I still love Barzal and think people sleep on him, although he does leave more to be desired, but he really is a fantastic player
