6 games is still too early to make any definitive statements on their chances, however it's looking like the concerns about their lack of top end skill are showing true, while their defensive structure under Trotz is no longer there.

With the 8th overall pick in the 2023 NHL draft the Islanders select some guy from Northern Lithuania that Lou was advised on. We both know even with the worst record, they still won’t pick top 3. Uncle Gary would never allow those talents to go to a market like that.

"You got to like this pick by the Islanders in the fourth round. The problem is that is is the first round....but we now have word that Ivan Awfulitch is three degrees removed from former NJ Devil assistant coach so we understand this pick"

Their fluke was success during the Covid years.
No, the Islanders lost talent (Toews, Leddy, Eberle), other players have aged significantly (the fourth line, Lee, Bailey, Pageau), and other players have not developed as expected (Beauvillier, Wahlstrom, ... Barzal?). Let's face it, NYI have struggled offensively, especially 5 v 5, since Lee had his injury. That was only made much worse by the loss of Eberle. As a NYI fan, I think it's well past time to call the Palmieri acquisition + signing a bust.

Lee-Barzal-Eberle *was* one of the more reliable/productive 5v5 lines around. It was no fluke. Since it was broken up, NYI have not been the same. And it's because NYI have not found a winger to make it work. I

NYI are in trouble, but imo it is the kind of trouble that would be addressed by adding 2 legit top-6 wingers to the team. With the salary situation, NYI are gonna have to hit a draft home run.

The Islanders are the 4th oldest team in the league. The only teams that are older have won their cups and are on the downhill (Caps, Pens, TB). They are in far more trouble than a pair of wingers are going to fix.

They missed their window. Only way forward is to blow it up again, and if they were smart, they would see the writing on the wall and trade their assets while they still hold value (Barzal). Hang on to Dobson, Romanov, and Sorokin, and sell off the rest.

Any deep and hard working team can seem like a dark horse but they can't be more than that. You need that top elite to be that top contending team.

I know it’s still early but I want to give the opportunity for anyone who wishes to recant their earlier statements in this thread.

Let's see.

The Islanders are First in their division in goals for, Second overall in goals for in the entire Eastern Conference and 4th in scoring in the entire league. They just blanked the Rangers, annihilated the Hurricanes, and manhandled the Stanley Cup Champs and in the process set a new NHL record for penalty kills to start a season.

Overachievers under Trotz?
No offensive talent?
Everyone got better around them?
Lottery team?
Can‘t hang with the so-called ”contenders”?

The earlier replies in this thread are making me smile. :naughty:

Say hello to your little friends! Like I said, this is the Islander's true offense unleashed. Underestimate it at your own peril.

Nah, they'll just wait for the Isles to lose a couple games, which they will, and then they'll pop back in with the same shit.

Just to make it clear: I hate threads like this. I'd rather the Isles go undefeated and have nobody talk about us, call us a fluke, overrated, whatever. Threads like this though I always feel will result in the hockey gods destroying us. I do love the confidence, and always appreciate fans who are positive, but at the same time.....let's pump the brakes a bit....at least on the main board lol.

So you wouldn't prefer they tear down villages?

Come what may I made this prediction back in August who cares what happens? I don't believe in hockey gods I only believe in what makes sense and what my experience tells me. Besides its part of the fun, just like the pundits like to do before the season starts. I just so happen to think they got it all wrong and so far the results speak for themselves. It made sense that they would balance out the system. It made sense that our talented D would join the rush. It made sense that Barzal would be allowed to be Barzal. These were all easy to predict. This team can compete on any given night and should be viewed by all as a playoff contender, but if you believe in half the crap you read out there you would have thought this team was a bottom dweller.

Isles look pretty fast and lead by their young guys too. Interesting team Lou assembled. Let's see when they play some tough teams. Ooops.

Colorado is missing Landeskog, the Rangers didn’t have Kravtsov and both teams were coming off back to backs. They clearly can’t beat them when they’re at full staff.

Haven’t we heard that one before?

Still waiting for the wheels to fall off!

Lambert must be better than Trotz at squeezing every ounce of effort out of this overachieving team. :sarcasm:

How about now after 11 games, STK?
